problem winding caliper piston

I`m trying to replace the discs and pads on my wifes Galaxy (`02). Having removed the old pads it looks like I`ve got to wind the caliper piston back in. Question is how and which way? I`ve wound it clockwise but it doesn`t wind in, it just turns around in the same place. I must have turned it about 20 - 30 revolutions. If I wind it anti clockwise it winds out fine but I still can`t wind it in. I can`t push it in either. Having managed to wind it out I can`t get the old pads back in either! Am I missing something?

Yes you're missing something.

I did our Peugeot pads and had the same issue!!

You need to try and push the piston back in at the same time as turning it...I used a g-clamp, they eventually go back in but it was a pain. The second one took seconds once I had the technique.

Yep. I've just done a BMW Mini and an Astra using a G clamp and long nosed pliers. Just take it easy with the clamp. You don't want too much pressure and to bugger the mechanism behind the pistons. You need a turning and twisting technique at the same time. I found it easier with a third hand.

Are you using a proper tool for the job? You need pressure and turning at the same time.

Which way to turn depends on the manufacturer, some are clock some are anti. need to check with the workshop manual

No G clamp require just a 3/8" drive Draper brake cube and use hand pressure, remember the handbrake cable must be fully slack and take the lid off the master cylinder.

I have encountered a caliper self-adjuster ruined by excessive force, I will name no names but a very well known national chain .

Thanks for the advice so far. I`ll give it another go in the morning in the daylight. Looks like I just need to apply more pressure whilst winding.

Yep can be done with g clamp and cir-clip pliers but may take awhile and lots of cussing, I've done several this way. Then I bought the proper wind back tool off ebay, it's an absolute bit of wee to do compared to the g clamp, £18 well spend I think but make sure you get the right one as there are right hand ones and left hand ones.

Mission Accomplished!

Thanks guys, all it needed was the extra pressure whilst trying to wind it in. All sorted now. LCB comes up trumps again.
