Car written off!

Dont worry its not a kit lol, Basically my mum has had a prang around 2 weeks ago was hit on the rear drivers side by a lady who went through a red light, now my mum has been told that her car will be written off this being an 06 Vauxhall Astra estate, now her insurance co have offered £3850 but the car was only bought from dealer a year ago for 6k and i have read on here and other forums that you should not accept the first offer from the insurance. I guess what im looking for is ways of getting more from the insurance is it a case of just keep declining their offer im not looking at taking the pee to much but she has had a lot to deal with in getting this sorted and i feel some sort of compo for that time and effort should amount to something as it was not her fault!! also my mum has a courtesy car through them which they will take back as 2 days after the cheque for £3850 arrives they want the car back which means she needs to buy a car pretty sharpish, but as we all know buying a car you dont buy the first one you see! not sure if any of this makes much sense but needed to find some more info and thought where better to ask thanks for reading and hope someone in the know can help Greg

What does glasses guide say for the value of the astra? Sounds to me like you should tell them to Feck off!

You need to get some proof of market value of an equivalent car. Have a hunt through Autotrader etc. and see what it will cost her to get as near as possible to the same car.

However, unless it was an absolute top spec, super low mileage car I think you might be a little optimistic on it's value.

I had a hideous offer once for a car. I printed off adverts for similar cars, provided a print out of the dealer services, used Autotrader, EBay and garage adverts.

The offer nearly doubled so it was well worth the effort. I was a bit bitter having to do the leg work but well worth it. It's their job to save money on payouts so just contact them and explain why your car is worth far more than their offer. If they ask for proof then provide the above!

As said above, I've been in a similar situation. Gather as much information/adverts as possible, try and find a few same year and same spec and print the ads. Also if the car has full dealer history and you have a fully stamped service book this can help with getting a better price.

Similar for me. I chucked the assessor bloke an Autotrader and asked him to explain why he was offering enough to buy a car 6 years older than the one he was looking at. He doubled his offer.

Indeed, be careful.
Yes, get the values of similar spec cars as evidence, or ask them to supply another car. I think there was a time when insurance companies actually did that.

Re the courtesey car. get onto the insurance company, find out if the other company is accepting liability. If so, they should pay for a car for a reasonable time, after all it is their fault. However, legal depts are generally pretty hopeless.
You should also claim for all out of pocket expenses. If you really want to go fo it, you could ask the other side to pay any projected increases in insurance premiums. There will be an increase, and it is their fault. Not sure how far you will get though.

Autotrader's showing an 06 astra estate at about £3800.. However they're 71K-101k miles...

Looks like they're offering the lower end of the scale

Right, Can't find one in details so here you go.

I had an accident. Got hit on the back. My insurance company gave me a curtecy car for a week and then took it back. I had not settled my claim yet. I had to rent myself another car to look for a car.

The other driver didn't want to accept liability. The matter took ages. My insurance company offered me the lowest amount they could so they didn't have to pay incase i was at fault. I did not accept.

In the end, they ended up paying all travel expences i did when i didn't have a car, payed the rented car, petrol for the cars i went around when i was looking.

And then i accepted the settlement.

Compensation is for people that suffer genuine injuries. Contrary to the practice of money grabbing pikeys it's not something you claim for as a matter of course Fortunately they are developing tests that will weed out the scum that help increase all our insurance premiums.

As above.. You will need to look closely at specs. I bought an 05 astra estate 1.7cdti life (lowest spec) back in 2008 for £4k and it had about 50k miles on the clock.

So id be very happy with an offer if 3800 if mine were wtitten off.

Use the phrase " I want to be put back in the position I was in before the accident "
ie, identical or similar car ( Milage, condition etc )
