datsun experts?

As well as a 968 this is the other car on my hit list

Going to view this tomorrow.....

I know they rusted from new, this has been well looked after and had a resto about 10 years ago.

Any hot spots to look for? Engine wise they seem pretty simple... Any hits+tips on them are welcome.

The plus point of this is its tax free and insurance is only £150 a year That leaves me mover £700 better off than the 968 every year.

However the 150bhp 40year old straight 6 might seem a little lacking, however at 1000kg its still nippy.

Look for rust at the steering mountings.
Head gasket problems were not unknown in 4 cylinder version of the engine (160B & 180B) I would expect the Z car to be the the same other than that mechanics were bullet proof but spares were very difficult even in the 1980s.

The 240z was always a big fav of mine, and the design was right, all of it (imho)

It was ruined, again imho. with the 260z and 280z and all later models

There's probably quite a few been converted to run an RB26 engine with 2wd box so that'll give you 276bhp from a standard engine or 400-500bhp with a bit of tuning and some goodies. I love the 240z but they are pretty serious money now. Looks a nice one but closer inspection may highlight any niggles.

had one when they were new . Loong time ago tho. Good power, iffy handling at it's limits, really cheap interior.
Check for: rust, rust and yet More rust. And even worse: repairs to said rust which will invariably fall of.. next week.
Take a magnet :-) Rust has killed 99% of these cars.
Mech parts are tough and rebuildable although the rear end can get wonky as wear sets in.

The interior was truly tacky the gear lever knob right out the 120c Cherry was the cheapest looking fake wood plastic knob I have ever seen --- I suspect it wasn't even real plastic.

Geeeez.. probably the only car that rusts even more readily than the Datsun.
Which was at least had the attraction of being frighteningly quick.

How very dare you!!
Probably not much in it performance wise, and the Monte does handle (just doesn't stop!! )

Plenty of cool cars from that era. Would love an early 911 too. They all rotted badly, some worse than others
To be fair, the Monte had sat in a lock-up for 15 years and really wasn't that bad and is still on its original sills

As Nickp says, there are plenty of cool cars from that era - just think of the sound of the 5 pot Audi Coupe's

Whats twisting my arm is the lower running costs, the £500+ insurance saving and £240+ a year RFL. That first year saving more than pays for some valves and a lumpy cam(200bhp )

love it looks great,

im young and thats why i run a kit car for insurance reason and my other toy is a old vw camper, i insure both cars for less than £500 a year,

insurance is daft, been looking at old porkers for when im fed up of the kit but scared of mega bills with them !

I'm not that old myself, well 30 which makes me feel old!

Been to look at 3 today....... including the blue one. You know how some girls look great in photo's put if you go over them with a torch they wouldn't look so good(and they'd not really like it too I guess).

The hunt continues. I might buy a Cal import and then tinker with it.

A sad day as I thought i'd have a new car. However also good as I think I know know what i'm looking for.
