Any Golf tuners HELPPPP.....
Mate of mine recently bought a rather tasty MK1 GTi which has a TSR 2.1(!) engine plus other trick bits like a big valve head.
He took if for a RR session and it's only making 129bhp and 130 lb ft whereas he was expecting 150+.
The RR guys reckon stroke is for a 2.1 but it has a standard cam for reasons unknown.
Even with a standard cam it should make a lot more low down torque than it achieved but the print-out shows it to have a big hole below 3000 and then
a pretty normal curve thereafter.
According to the RR guys the engine rebuild was pretty professional and it all runs sweetly, plus the vendor seems a straight up guy but did buy the
engine on fleabay without hearing it run.
The RR guys reckon it needs the head off to establish what it really is then fit a different cam to release it's potential.
So the question for the massif is - any ideas /suggestions?
Cheers, Pewe

Hi
could you get your mate to search for any extra codes on the engine stamped in (maybe by TSR) when they made the unit, that way if he was to contact
Tim Stiles Racing performance, they "might" have known history on the unit.
I was lucky enough to have similar to this with a metro turbo i bought "sight unseen" bought as a trade in from an old guy who died, the
trader who bought it knew anything turbo might interest me, and he offloaded i to me for £150.00, but the guy who died, his grandson used to use the
car and said grandfather used to "pay" for unknown maintenance on the car, after the guy died the car was offloaded much to the
consternation of the grandson who pestered me for months to buy the car back (for double i paid) as I was working offshore I never even lifted the
bonnet of the car, as I wanted the motor to install into a classic mini project.
Upon getting back to the beach I eventually lifted the bonnet to a very surprising sight.... a VERY VERY Clean and tidy engine bay you could eat yer
dinner off (even though the shell was dog rough, I can only surmise the Grandson built/used the car as a "sleeper"
This thing had a MBE fuel injection system, avon bar alloy cover and charge cooler... and more importantly a funny code number stamped on the block,
a quick call to avon bar with the code number revealed an engine sitting outside had cost just south of 9k with engine, box and efi all done as a
package !!! no wonder the grandson was so eager to get the car back. suspension have spax coilovers allround and anti roll bars and upgraded brakes,
so i dread to think what was spent on the car.
so get your mate looking for number you never know what he might have in his hands.
And no said metro was never resold to the grandson !!! but after its installation into a classic mini, on its first long run from home to the metro
centre in Newcastle, i come back out full of carrier bags to find the frikking thing was stolen !! even with a catII toad alarm, pissed off wasnt the
word.
Got agreed insurance for it but thats not the point.......
Some people can never handle the truth and always try to shoot the messenger instead of taking an honest look in the mirror (its always easier to
blame another than to face reality), but secretly they wish they could grow a pair and be the messenger !!!

As Hector says, the first thing is to try and verify the engine build with TSR.
