Pajero advice

Hello all

I need a cheap 4x4 for running in and out of a field and dragging a horse box adout, it will get used during the week for general running around (not work) and maybe a bit of fun in the snow if we get any!

I was looking at a SWB version, they seam to all be auto's which doesnt bother me and have a good spec.

Have any of you guy's had any experiance of one or own one you can point me in the right direction, I know my way around a car but is there any grey area's specific to the car.

I had a lwb 2.8 Pajero a few years ago, great truck, watch out for overheating/head gasket problems, the 2.8 is the one to go for, they pull alot better and have no cam belt unlike the 2.5 to worry about. Auto boxes are strong and the ones to go for, only down side is very low 20's mpg, and only 18mpg when towing my twin axle caravan.

As regards engines, the 2.5 diesel is a little under-powered and can be prone to head/gasket problems if not regularly maintained.
The 2.8 diesel is generally regarded as the best all-rounder and is more robust than the 2.5 (has timing chain instead of belt) but although more powerful, is slightly less economical than the 2.5. The fuel pump seals can fail on the 2.8's (due to the difference in quality between Jap fuel and ours) which can cost several hundred pounds to repair (although there are one or two specialists listed on the above site)
The petrol V6's come in 3 litre and 3.5 litre are a lot more powerful than the diesels but very heavy on the go juice.
I did have a LWB 2.8 but decided, as I do very little annual mileage, to change it for my present SWB 3.5 V6 GDi petrol (200+ bhp)
Which goes pretty damn well but can return as little as 11mpg if I'm heavy with the right foot! Mine also has the tiptronic box and Recaro interior (which is nice.)
The SWB is far less practical than the cavernous 7-seat LWB as it has very little boot space and being a 2-door, access to rear seats is tight.
Pajeros are very, very capable off- road. The super-select 4WD system allows you to run in 2wd and change to 4WD at anything up to 60kph. As well as high and low ratios, all have a locking centre diff and some have an optional limited slip rear.

I was under the impression that pajero's and shoguns are quite expensive due to a good reputation; that could be a good or bad thing depending on which way you look at it!

TBH im not impressed by the concept of part time 4wd, my jeep is very twitchy in the wet because you have to run it as rwd until you have enough slip on the road. Plus its short so kicks out quick, and can be hard to catch.

However, the jeep is plush for the money!

ps had a pajero for a few weeks, it was pretty good.

I have seen a very tidy 2.5 with low mileage, I know the guy who has had it for 3 years.

I think i will try and have a go in the 2.8 and 2.5 back to back and see what diference there is.

We (my parents) had one mid 90's, a Japanese import 2.5 LWB.

One of the best cars! It did absolutely EVERYTHING, coped with some ridiculous off-roading, and made it fairly easy. Auto-box was robust, if not the smoothest. Just needed the standard servicing, nothing broke in the 4-5 years we had it.

The jap ones have very nice spec - try get full leather power everything etc.


Unless you plan on doing serious offroading, see if you can find a LWB - they are versatile beyond belief, and SWB's are really twitchy and less comfy on the road (don't know if that matters to you?)

If buying now, I'd try to find a 2.8 and set a couple hundred quid aside for the IP seals - or some sort of seals, I don't really remember which. Denso pump (Bosch ripoff) is super robust other than that. Excellent car for vegetable oiling/biodiesel incidentally!
