Could this be done i.e. gear welded to starter motor?

Right folks, (Happy New Year by the way) finding a sensible way to fit an electric reverse to my live axle car is causing me huge issues.

Would it be possible to weld a suitably machined gear onto the end of a pre-engagement starter motor - one just like that pictured below in fact?

Secondly, is anyone up for the challenge? Cash waiting.....

There's already a gear on it, usualy you just need a larger gear on the prop for it to engage with, simples

That mechanism should work... Last time I ran out of petrol I used the starter motor to move the car to the side of the road

That was Plan A. Unfortunately space is so tight around the gearbox output shaft that the biggest gear that I can fit is only about 10mm larger than the sprocket adaptor. Hence with the standard starter gear attached, I can't get the two gears to mesh without the prop being in contact with the body of the starter motor.

I discussed this with Andy Bates ones, as mine was live axle but I was getting very close tot he SVA/IVA switch over and was worried I'd have to buy one.

If I remember he suggested that it could be done at the engine end - but that the motor needed some material shaved off around the output shaft for clearance - so its obviously a tight spot.

Is your prop made? if not the only other place on a live axle is the mid point bearing in the prop.

Might be worth speaking to him as he's done it before.

To answer your question - its perfectly reasonable to weld to a shaft - guess it depends on seals/bearings nearby though... the heat wouldnt do them much good.

I'll give Andy a shout in the next week or so if I've not got it sorted. There's even less room on the 04-08 R1 then there is on the Fireblade so I'm not convinced that shaving the body of the starter would do it.

No, the prop's not made yet. Austen (MK9R on here) has applied the centre bearing method but the work that has has gone into it potentially makes it uneconomical to replicate if you don't have the skills and tools.

Has anyone every tried/considered/poopoo'd wheel chair motors?
ie: Jazzy Select 6 PM802-D10B Wheelchair Right Wheel Motor | eBay

I know some are 24v but they are plentiful torque and more simple than pre-engaged S/motors.

A quick update. I managed to get the original gear off today so I think this is a go-er.

Once I have something more helpful to offer I'll post it up.
