Blowing your wankel....basics?

Hi all,

I'm looking at supercharging an RX-8 and this being my first supercharged project I thought should ask on here as I know a few have had dealings with supercharges. I have been giving some maths homework from make everything, but I'm also after any advice people may have. I want to use an eaton style charger as there is loads of room on the top of the engine.

All help is appreciated

Thanks

Barry

RX7 had twin turbos on high performance model. RX8 no turbo, at least the ones I have driven here in Canada, my son has one, and I was employed by a local Mazda dealer to pick cars up from other dealers on dealer tades.

Rotaries are 'tricky' to Boost . Being essentially 2 strokes (spare the babble) these Suck up intake charge at a horrific rate.
The Size of a the turbo can be dinner plate size.. true :-) On even a lowly 13b version.
Also these Rotaries max out at 6psi ..on a dedicated drag car !
Wayyy below what a piston engine typically does.
Lemans winning Factory effort cars used 8 psi! and those were truly exceptional rotary engines.. purpose designed/ built.
Doubt that your 'salvaged' Eaton whirlygig can produce enough airflow to be even worth the fitting effort.
Lots to research... before... heading down this particular road.
It's doable but don't go in Blind.

I think you would be better off storing your motor and fitting a 13b turbo motor.

One off the big advantages is that with just a seal change and new larger turbo and wankel friendly ecu 350 hp + is easily and relatively reliably available - of course consumption is high. The main thing is to find a tuner who understands these motors.

Might be worth contacting these guys Rotechniks.
I've no experience of them other than they are a local company and their name crops up when rotaries are being discussed.
HTH.

Hi Barry

Again, not much experience on the actual subject, but have a mutual friend who has a blown triple rotor RX07. All of the work was done by Pip at WGT Auto-Developments. I've heard nothing but good things about them, perhaps it's worth giving them a call?

Good luck!

Ben.

If you want a forced induction wankel then yes a 13B turbo would be the easiest solution. I know from my limited experience (ran a boosted RX7 TurboII) that these engines really can pump some air and the compressor will struggle to keep up as the revs rise. So if you do go down the supercharged route then you'll probably need a bigger supercharger than conventional engine size calculations would estimate. I'm guessing an M90 or maybe even an M112.

You may want to contact Racing Beat in the USofA, they have a long relationship with rotary engines.

At present my engines book figure is 231 ps. My goal is to get 300 hp. A couple of people are selling kits for just over £3000! I can't justify that so hence why I want to do it myself. So I'm not looking for a massive power increase, and as such I'm thinking I don't need a massive amount of psi from the charger?

Trying to build a locost, supercharge an RX-8 and look after new born twins......And women say men cant multi task!!
