Vauxhall Signum 2.2i - Any good ? any things to look out for ?

My best chum is going to look at a Vauxhall Signum 2.2i, 80,000 miles full service history 2006 model, budget is £3500 - £4000.

Is there anything that he should be aware of or look out for ??

He is not the sort that will fix or service it himself, I will help where i can but time is not something I have a lot of with a baby on the way, 2 kids already, a 1976 Mini & the kitcar to build so I think back street garage servicing is the way forwards.

His other half has just written off their SAAB 93 in quite a serious accident (& walked away from it pretty un-scathed)

He is torn between another SAAB 93 & changing for something different.

The only reason he bought the SAAB was because he borrowed my SAAB 95 & loved it, at the moment he is strugling to find a SAAB 93 in the good condition of the one that got written off which is why he is looking at other models.

Basically they have two 16 year old kids who are both bigger than me (im not called stumpy for nothing !) so they need a 4 seater car with plenty of rear legroom & have got used to the nice extra's that came with the SAAB.

Does anyone have any recommendations of a good spec car that will fit the bill ??

Take it thats it petrol,if its got chain rather than a belt they the chain guides break (very common)
if its an auto radiator and oil cooler tanks weep water in oil(kiss good bye to box.(again very common)
Rear suspension rattles from shocks and top mounts, plus rear rose joints and antiroll bar bishes

Get down to the car auctions?

I went a fortnight ago looking for something cheap for one of my sons.....

There were 3 white vectra 3.2 V6s there - one owner full service history 125K, 131K and the estate had 164K miles.
All three were on a '54' plate...... each fetched £900!

There was also an '07' plate white Volvo V70 2.4 T5 SE Estate with just 182K on the clock - again, one owner full service history - that went for a mere £1700!

(The only thing I didn't mention about the above was that they were submitted by Merseyside Police - having said that, once you'd filled in the holes in the roof and T-Cut the teltale lines from the bodywork where the orange stickers had left faint (but still readable!) lines - they would probably have been great cars!)

And my son ended up with a pretty mint 89K 1.6 escort for £175.......

Lots of space required ?

Skoda Superb.

It's a limo in there.
Mechanically, it's a VW Passat, which I think is a very good thing.

Others will, of course, disagree.

I'd be suggesting a Superb though.
Look up the toys you get in an Elegance spec. car.

Sorry to degrade your suggestion for the excellent Skoda Superb but it corners like a double - decker bus on baloon tyres.

I won't disagree, much, but I think they're meant for a more sedate state of deportment

All the worst cars (unreliable) I've ever had have been Vauxhalls. There's loads of better cars out there and once you've had a Saab you are kind of spoilt so tell him to look harder! Volvo maybe?

i have got a signum 1.9cdti elite with nearly every option in the book. had it from 26k its now got 105k on it. the only thing that has gone wrong on it is the inter cooler split at about 100k. other than that its had one set of discs all round 2 sets of pads a battery, cambelt and water pump change at 80k and its regular 20,000 mile service.

plus it will do 55mpg every day of the week and i have had it up to 63mpg on a long run

driving wise. its smooth as silk on the motorway and as quiet as the 5series i had as a company car for a bit, its also very very stable well above speeds your aloud to go in the uk. its pretty good on long sweeping A roads, but can get a bit un-settled through tight twisties but then its a pretty big car at 1.6tonne.

as for the saab vs the signum they are both the same platform, the suspension and sub assemblies under them are 100% identical so theoretically they should drive the same. from experience the saab is a bit sharper as its got stiffer suspension

I heard the 2.2i has troubles with the waterpump and tensioners if not previously serviced properly, like most 16v vauxhalls.

Highly recommend the 2.0T as its a very sturdy Saab engine or just as good, the 1.9 CDTi

ive got a 2.2 sxi vectra, and have had it for about 4 years. the only thing that has gone wrong was a cracked windscreen due to a stone flicking up. ans a cracked rear coil spring. other than that just servicde costs. only done 66k though.
and i find it quite long geared and economical too!

i have had all sorts of cars, fiats, bmw's vw's audi's, lancia, alfa, nissans, mercs, fords and vauxhalls. of all of them the vauxhalls have been the least trouble.

when i was 17 i had an almost new 1.2 old shape corsa. i drove it everywhere flat out, if i didnt bounce it off the rev limiter in every gear like all 17 year old lads i wasnt doing it right, couldn't kill it how ever hard it tried.

several years later i was given a clapped out k reg 1.4 automatic astra estate when i blew up my pride and joy. it got a free oil change from kwikfit which come with their insurance. i ended up selling my pride and joy for a deposit on my first house, subsequently i was stuck with the astra for over a year. i hated driving it but it did 40k without any services, and the only part i changed on it was a rear shock which i broke by stupidly overloading it with all the running gear from the sierra for my kitcar. at the end of its use rather than scrap it i gave it to a another mate who is a kitchen fitter. he stripped the seats out the back and uses it as a van still to this day, i believe it has since done another 20k and still not been serviced, and still working 4 years later.

Absolutely, they are wonderful cars if you like wafting around in peace and comfort, and they are exceptional value as well. If you are after warp speed and the sharpest handling then look elsewhere, but that doesn't stop them being a good car.
