VW 1.9 diesel

I know these have a reputation for lunching their cambelts but does anyone know if that kills the valves/head/pistons or do you just glide quietly to a stop?

Belts aint so much a problem, but the tensioner & idler pullies that they run on are, little difference to the end result though! You'd be very lucky if it got away without any damage, if it's running at anything more than tickover it's gonna clout valves hard enough to do damage & even at idle you may well not get away with it.

The valves sit fairly vertical in relation to the pistons & the cam acts directly on them with a bucket type follower so there's no give in the system so as well as bending a valve or 4 it's possible that it'll smash a follower & I suppose breaking the cam is a possibility (Ford 1.8D does this & the layout is similar).
I've only been involved in the repair of one 1.9TDI with a snapped belt, it did a few valves & smashed a couple of followers. Unfortunatly it was thought by those doing the initial repair that it might not have done much damge so it was timed up with a new belt on & it ran, but very badly due to the broken followers & running it wrecked the cam & head. There was no bottom end damage at all other than the marks in the pistons which were minimal, it got a second-hand head & ran fine for years (& still was last time I saw about a month ago).

If it's the PD engine I'd expect similar but mabye more complications due to the cam also operating the injector? I've not been into one so wouldn't know.

They're no more or less likely to "lunch" their cam belts than most other engines. The sheer number of them in existence and the age most of them now are means you might have heard of more of them.

That's bad news. So no gentle gliding to a stop. More a crunch fest of valve gear, followers, cam and a biggish bill like any other interference engine.
Better get on and put new cam belt kit on.

Next question. Why won't Club polo let me join???? You may ask who would want to but amongst the information on tyre stretch, blue LEDs, ICE, and 'Which garage in Manchester to fit my new sparkplugs' there is a load of useful information.

FYI. Tyre stretch. The practice of fitting a 165/60 x 17 on a 8 x 17 rim so the beads are pulled wide apart and the tyre is stretched almost flat between the rims. When fitted it looks as if the car is running on just rims. Wicked innit mate.
