Track / Road car project. Which one?
I am thinking of buying something cheap say around £500 - £1000 which is road legal, stripping and selling off all the interior etc and bits I
don't want, then rebuilding as a Sunday blast / trackday but keeping it road legal.
I am not bothered about fuel consumption or putting the kids in the back, just two bucket seats in the front.
Budget for rebuild 2k ish, so either a 206 GTI etc etc etc, I have had 205's before and looking for something a little more modern.
Any suggestions guy's would be great.

2.0 16v redtopped Nova. Mine was SOO much fun.
(edit, didnt read the more modern bit)
In which case an early 197 might JUST squeeze in budget (a high mile/cat d or similar, and combining the modding and buying budget), if not a
172/182.

What about a rover 200 - boss as one fitted with a turbo rover 420 engine. Pretty straight swap

If looking hot hatches then definitely a renaultsport Clio, feel free to pm me for advice on them, don't expect to be able to mod for power
though without spending £000s.

Would late 90's be modern enough? I've seen a few MX5's on ebay that would fit, and iirc Clairetoo has done a couple of subframes to
fit a v6

Citroen Xsara VTS ?- dead cheap and great handling.
Plenty of power potential too.

A mate & myself have a Mk3 Astra, not all that appealing but we've basicly used it reshell a smashed SAAB 9-3 turbo as they share the same
floorpan, pretty much all the important stuff just bolts together & then plumbing & wiring wasn't to much trouble. So far we've
got about £800 in it, not sold the 2.0 ecotec & box or any of the SAAB stuff we dont need. Yet to do much with the handling but it's quick
in a straight line! The SAAB engine is easy to tune & reliable to 250bhp & as cheap as you could expect to take a fair bit further.

For around a £1000, its got to be the Clio 172 for me, mine cost me £1500 about 3 years ago, they have come down in price since then, during the time
I had it, I spent a further £1000 on a few track bits and bobs, Carbon Lorraine brake pads, 2nd hand R888's and A048's off ebay, also
picked up a cage etc a real buget racer, did about 20 trackdays in it over the 2 years I had it, great fun.

They haven't come down much, £1000 buys you a pretty manky example unless you are lucky.
I'll suggest an MG ZS180, you'll get a very usable example for your 1k. The MG has been universally praised for it's handling and
has a useful amount of power from it's rev hungry V6.

Some good ideas there, I must say I have not seen a 172 Clio that cheap as yet.
Does nobody rate the Pug 206 GTI as a base to start with?

There's loads for sale for around a £1000, and don't forget even the ones advertised at £1300 to £1500 can be bought for a grand with a
bit of negotiation.
After a quick search, Here.
