My car is being held hostage

My car is kept at my Grandparents house which suffered a massive burst last night and took out the house electrics.

Bloody garage door is electrically operated.

We need to wait at least 24 hours before the anyone from the insurance is allowed to touch the electrics.

Bloody typical.. its looks nice weather. I could force entry via the side door if the insurance takes for ever...

Oops!!

Most electrically operated devices have some sort of mechanical override... although in some cases it's called 'a sledgehammer'...

The ones here in Canada have a small rope hanging from the location the door is attached to the chain, pulling the rope releases the attachment and you simply lift the door, some are quite heavy. The rural area I live in suffers power failures during storms and we have to use the above system to get the cars out.

I'm pretty sure that they all have to have a mechanical override system. Ours also has a red rope and knob hannging from the mechanism. Give that a yank to disengage the electric drive and the door can be opened manually.
