Hi guys
Just to let you know that sky have annouced some details of the upcoming Sky F1 Channel

That could have been worse actually.
I have HD but not Sky Sports.
Because of HD, I'll get Sky F1 HD for no additional charge.
All practice session, qualifying and all races with no advertising breaks on the races.
It could be a fair bit worse to be fair.

If you click the link and select tab No 3 it says Sky Sports F1™HD is free to full Sky Sports customers and to Sky HD subscribers. I read that
to mean that you need either full Sky Sports or subscribed to Sky HD, to watch F1 on Sky

Not sure if that is want is meant, full sky sports subscribers will get the SD version and full sky sports with HD will get the HD version.

Ok just found this on sky website:-
The dedicated channel will be provided at no extra charge to all Sky TV customers who take both Sky Sports 1 and Sky Sports 2 or the HD pack of
channels.
so hope that is clear, it does say or the HD pack.

So to watrch F1 like I have this year it seems I need to pay for a Sky install (£?) and then sign up to a £50 a month package just to watch all the F1
races....hmmm maybe not.

You could get it for £35 - (£25 standard sky package + £10 HD package)

So £420 (plus installation fee) for 12 months viewing of something that currently only cost me the licence fee..... no thanks Sky.

I read somewhere on the 'net than a German sports channel
shows F1 - can anyone shed any light on this ?
If so, I'll line up the Sat system I bought from B&Q for £24.98, that I
use for the caravan, to that satellite, turn the sound down on
the tv, and turn Radio 5 on for the commentary.
Cunning plan - or am I talking b***ocks ??

We used to do similar back in the old days of analogue satalite, when it was on ITV, we'd switch to RTL during the adverts as it was also
broadcast on the same 'astra' satelite system for free. I would imagine it would be easy enough to tune in to european channels on a
system thats 'tuneable'.

Back in the old days you could get feeds if you knew how to tune the equipment, one year my dad managed to set up our system for the tour de france so
we had multiple channels picking up individual camera feeds that were being broadcast uncoded to the Tv stations. I remember watching feeds from fixed
cameras from before the race reached them and just watching people stood around doing nothing.
Any word yet on what the BBC highlights will be like as I think they currently bill the race repeats on 3 as highlights.

Just remember
Bernie wants staggering amounts of money to broadcast F1
BBC commits to this on the basis it will be able to increase the license fee (or tax on television)
Government says enough is enough, stick with the enormous amount of dosh you already get
BBC realises that not every television tax payer wants to pay Bernie
Sky thinks it can make money by taking over the deal and charging its subscribers
BBC gets some live races and the others delayed for a very reduced fee.
License fee payer (non-F1 fan) wins by getting a reduced license fee.
F1 fan without Sky loses (slightly) by having to watch delayed coverage
F1 fan with Sky watches as before (in HD)
I don't see what the problem is.....

Very well put.
Exactly the same reason footy isn't shown on the 'free' channels like it use to be.
I know the producer for sky F1, the coverage etc will be very very comprehensive.

Doesn't alter the fact that BSBSky abuse their quasi-monoply and the Murdoch's seek world domination.
From info in other forums it appears when the the BBC took over the current contract their bid was considerably higher than Bernie expected. The
fact is a lower bid from a free to air broadcaster is worth a lot more to the teams than Sky. While under the current contract F1 cost the BBC a
lot of money it is still cheap in terms of cost per viewer hour when compared with other high quality output and the BBC could have cut cost
dramatically by slashing the the number personnel they send to each race.

I read somewhere that the average program costs the BBC 7p per viewer. F1 costs £1.50

You can't compare F1 with the cheap output like Cash in the Attic or Pointless , about 20 years ago the BBC quoted figure of
£500,000 pounds budget per episode for a top end TV detective drama even with new technology that will probably be nearer 1.5 million now. For
they danegeld the BBC pay for the rights and the feed the BBC get a lot of TV hours, the additional production costs could be slashed
drastically without affecting quality.
