Is this something to be worried by?

I was getting some insurance quotes to see what on my short list of cars to go and have a look at were financially viable and got a really good quote on a H Reg Japanese import Mx5 which is currently top of my list, the only thing is, when I used the number plate thing on go Compare, the info for the car listed it as a manual and not an auto and made the quote about £40 less compare to entering the data manually. Is this likely to be something that could cause me trouble if I bought the car?

I have an Automatic license so If I went through with it I'd make sure the insurer was aware of this mistake but does this mean the car is likely to be registered wrong?

If you call them up, when you speak to them and give them the reg, they'll ask you about the details of the car. If incorrect, just tell them. It may or may not change the premium.

My passat for some reason shows up on SOME number plate lookups as a 20v 1.8 Turbo Petrol, rather than the 1.9TDi that it is. I've got the original bill of sale for it with all the records and history, and it's always been a TDi with matching numbers etc., so no idea why it shows up as a petrol engine on some number plate databases.

Hasn't been an issue, I just told them their lookup is wrong. Didn't affect the premium for me at all.

My MX5/Eunos comes up on price comparison sites as an Audi A4 Sportline! I spoke to someone at Adrian Flux about it and he said it's a common occurrence for imported cars if you use the Reg to search for the car on comparison sites but as long as you enter the correct vehicle details manually it's absolutely nothing to worry about. Something to do with how the original importer allocates/obtains the UK plate when the vehicle is first imported apparently..

Adrian Flux offered me fully comp insurance for over £100 less than the cheapest 3rd Party Fire & Theft quote on any of the comparison sites btw so I'd try giving a few people a ring

If you're looking to insure an MX5 import give A-Plan a try too.
They were a load cheaper than the comparison sites when I had mine.

At that age of car it is def worth trying the classic insurers. Of course, it also depwnds of what mileage you intend covering, and if you have another everyday car as well. However, classic policies can be exceptional value, and usually include full breakdaown cover etc.
Try Peter james, Footman james, lancaster etc.

Whatever they quote its to draw you in, do not except the quote but call and beat them up.

no1 daughter started off with £1,500 on her mini one, in the end they came down to £565 same company.

Thanks for the advice, I was planning on having a phone around but I don't really want to waste my time on the phone before I've even decided to buy the car. Will having a Hard top make any difference to insurers as this particular car has one (I've got a garage so I'm not desperate for one).

I'd imagine having a hard top would lower your premium a little because it's harder to break into... But I remain cynical
