I'm sort of with you but I used to own a car that I had to hold with the brake pedal on an incline as the hand brake wasn't good enough
and putting it in park if it was cold or wet usually killed the engine.

I'm very conscious of doing that - I've LED rear lights on my tintop (F10 5 series Beemer) and they are *bright*. Noticed one chap sat
behind me trying to shield his eyes....

I have an semi-auto Merc and I always sit at traffic lights and junctions with the brakes on. I could put in neutral I guess but then it's
engaging the footbrake and as Morcus's car - it's not that efficient! There is no "park" in my gearbox either so my options
are limited!
Edit to spell Morcus's name correctly...opps.

I've got a semi box in the panda but I usually leave that in gear with the Hand brake on for the reason you mentioned about putting it in
nuetral. And because one time it decided to come over all italian and not get back into Drive, It's annoying when it does this because it beeps
the most ennoying beeper to tell you it's not done what you've told it and goes on for ages.

Yeah, I sit with my foot on the brake. It's probably because I've grown up with cars that have useless handbrakes and there's a lot
of hills around here!
Sorry Denis.

I was having a rant on Twitter the other day about drivers who think, just because they start indicating to change from lane 1 to lane 2 (or 2 to 3)
that you should immediately slam on your brakes or drive off the road to allow them to complete their manoeuvre. This usually happens as I'm
approaching their rear quarter to overtake or in some cases when I'm already partially alongside. They then proceed to flash lights as if you
have cut them up or something!
Don't these people know that signalling should mean that they believe the course if clear and it is safe to carry out the manoeuvre and is
supposed to be preceded by the "mirror" check.
The other one that freaks me out is when HGVs start signalling when I am almost past them. I start wondering if they know I'm still not quite
clear of the front of their vehicle...

I believe that when you pull up you are meant to apply both foot and handbrakes, and keep your brake lights on as a warning until someone pulls up
behind you. Then come off the foot brake to avoid dazzle. I always do it this way, except when ive forgotten

Not sure i totally agree there. I put on my indicator when i want to pull out. Sometimes you might have someone hovering a few metres behind you and
not gaining or falling back, and rather than just pull out too close, i might indicate and see if they flash me out. If they ignore me and still dont
start to pass, i'll probably pull out anyway though!
Afterall, if you've already checked you mirrors, then when you decide you're going to move across you would be putting the indicator on at
the same time as you start your move, which ISTR people always moan at BMW drivers about, flashing once as they pull out.

Apologies in advance for when I get my Avon on the road as I may need to sit with the foot brake on. Reason being I have wilwood calipers on the rear
and the handbrake efficiency is known to be crap.

Maybe they've got autos and are holding them on the brakes. Apart from my Fury (4 speed manual box), I only drive autos.
I hope you take some relief from the fact that continually holding an auto on the brakes means two things - firstly that they're wearing the
torque converter out, and they've very expensive. If you've ever driven an auto that rolls backwards on hills or has really sloppy
changes, this could be the reason why. Secondly, and less smugly for the rest of us, they're using more fuel to do this. Fuel we could be
burning.

Both of today's rants covered by Highway Code rule 114:
quote:
You MUST NOT
•use any lights in a way which would dazzle or cause discomfort to other road users, including pedestrians, cyclists and horse riders
•use front or rear fog lights unless visibility is seriously reduced. You MUST switch them off when visibility improves to avoid dazzling other
road users (see Rule 226)
In stationary queues of traffic, drivers should apply the parking brake and, once the following traffic has stopped, take their foot off the footbrake
to deactivate the vehicle brake lights. This will minimise glare to road users behind until the traffic moves again.

Favorite Hate ... People who switch on rear fog lights on when just the slightest hint of a mist, or worse when its raining!
BTW ... I don't think there is anything that will wear in a conventional i.e. non lock-up torque converter.

Undertaking is an offence, but filtering isn't. The difference is to undertake, you change lanes to make the pass whereas you can pass on the
left as long as you don't change lanes to do it, and as long as its safe to do so. As explained to me at a IAM/Police 'drive safe'
course.

Just to be pedantic, "undertaking" is what funeral directors do.
We are referring to "passing on the left (or inside)
I have no qualms peforming the latter. In fact, I would argue that as long as you do not move
left, pass then move immediately move back right but rather stay as long as poss in the inner lane
then simply your lane is moving quicker
