Tin-Top again !!! (focus 1.8 blacktop)
its broken again (I'm never buying another car with tham many miles on it again...)
this time I think the fan has packed in - tried running 12v throught it and got nothing, ran a continuity test through it and got nothing so I'm
fairly sure the motor is dead so I'll try any get one from the scrappy and see what happens
but I also stuck the mulit meter across the loom and I don't think its getting the signal to come on either ?
the temp gauge and fan switch are both supposed to be controled by the ECU accoreding to the book of lies (using the head temp sensor as the input) so
I'm also suspecting the temp sensor
anyone got any suggestions on how to test the sensor without removing it ? (its a pig to get at)

Obd2 will tell you if the ecu is seing the coolant sensor. The fan is switched via a relay by the ecu but its not a simple earth to the relay.

I think the ECU is actually seeing the sensor, the gauge starts off cold then gradualy moves up to normal (dead centre, there arn't any actual
temp's marked)
once or twice its gone all they way up to the max and otehr times it sits in the dead centre even when the coolant is boiling
I did fancy getting a code reader, but I've no idea which ones are worth getting...
is there anythign out there that will work well with my car and a 59 plate polo and a 57 disco ? (for as little £ as possible of course )

zetec's have a separate sensor for the dash. If it wasnt seeing the coolant sensor I would think it would be running very rich.

It runs ok and doesn't smell rich and it passed its emissions with flying colours (the plugs looked ok the last time they where out too)
it has got a very small vac leak that I can't find and a small oil leak on the front somewhere (not sure where exactly) but the water pump is
covered in oil althought it seems to around the exhaust manifold too...
it the dash has its own sensor can you think of any reason why it would show normal temp when the collant is literally boiling in the header tank ?
