Camping in France - recommendations
OK so its 15 years since I went camping and I may have lost it!
Rumours are that you have to book for a pitch and they are hard to get in August and they all want multiple days. True or false? I was just going to
turn up on spec with a 2 man bivvy is that rash?
Also what is best price for the chunnel - August again!. Seems that getting a cheap day return and not bothering to use the return portion is cheapest
but crazy - am I misreading it?
And no i will not be using a Locost plumping for aircon cos I'm hoping to need it
Cheers!

Depends on the size of the pitch you need, the location and what kind of campsite you are looking for.
If you are looking for a large pitch with say electric hook up, then you may struggle to get much without prebooking/longer stay. We never had
problems when touring with a mbike and a 2 man tent so you should be fine with a 2 man bivvy.
The smaller municipal campsites (we found a great one in Troyes) are basic and cheap and tend not to get booked up so much in advance.
Also depends on what part of France, seaside resorts will be heavily booked in the summer hols, but there are some great ones in either central or
alps areas.
Get yourself a book of campsites in france and do a little research on where you want to go. The europeans are very into there touring holidays so
single nights are not unusual. You may get fed up with taking down and putting up the tent daily though.
There is usually something in the small print on not taking up the return leg of a day return. Why only chunnel and not ferries. LD lines do fairly
good rates and check out www.ferrycheap.com who do some good deals. You can relax more on the ferry and use the time to have something to eat and 40
winks.

We used to tow a big box around france in the summer holidays. never booked anywhere, and only got turned away by one site. They directed us to
another a mile down the road.....
So don't fret, just turn up would be my advice. Municipal sites vary hugely in cost/facilities and niceness, but can be excellent value. A book
or two is very handy, or I guess google.
Re chunnel, you may get stung if you don't use the return journey. Plus how will you get back?? they won't let you return without using
the outward part of the booking. Have found the ferry much cheaper at times, usually early morning or so on.

What they ^^^ said for camp sites.
BBC news at weekend mentioned ferry prices being cheap at the moment because of a bit of a price war going on between SeaFrance and BrittanyFerries.
