Tintop auction prices are mad.

I spent an afternoon at the auction, prices are totally daft at the moment.

Probably because of the massive hike in insurance costs for young drivers the bottom has fallen out of the Corsa size hatch market an asorted of very clean low mileage Corsas were fetching buttons --- they were all 4 cylinder models 6 years old or less with 40k to 60k miles some were high spec and a couple were truly immaculate none made more than £800.

At the other end any normal car in the higher road tax bands particularly bands L & M more than 5 years old is failing to make reserve for example a a very immaculate Jag X type 2.5 V6 SE 51 plate with 57k miles and very long MOT full service history failed to make reserve £1,700 --- I really don't like X types but even I had to sit on my hands to stop from bidding.

One really good buy was a 51plate Mazda 323F GSI 1600 estate ------ nice clean motor long service history alloys 68k miles went for £285 I thought it would make £700 to 800

I'm selling a couple of cars at the moment and there is really no interest what so ever, I might pop along to the auction for a look this week.

But be careful - I once bought a 5 year old Audi A6 estate 1.9 TDI SE with the multitronic gearbox for 8.5K - lovely car? Cost me over 2.5K to sort the knackered gearbox out - turns out the multitronic on all but an A8 are notorious for failing and costing a fortune to sort out. - But - to get back to the subject - those prices are pretty cheap, even for auctions!

Ah, you broke the golden rule. well, my one.
Either buy a car that has warranty and full history, ideally one owner. Otherwise very cheap. Lots of the cars are in there for a very good reason (usually a bad one)

BT

Which auction was that ?

I'm thinking CCA ?

Might be worth having a wee look by.
We're just about to spend a few quid on SWMBOs W reg Ibiza which she bought out of Livingstone's 9 years ago.
Might not be worth it going by what you're telling me.

Edited to add, a workmates recently got £1,300 quid for a 2003 Golf TDI in very very presentable condition.
That was at CCA.

I had thought there was 2 grand in it all day long.

I think he cleared £1,100 after all the fees were paid.

Too true back in the late 1980s and 1990s the auctions were flooded with cheap Audi 100 Avants because the trade saw them as money pits and dumped them for fear of expensive hidden faults. Since then general rule is steer clear of high end Audis with complex electronics unless buying from VAG dealer.

Likewise nice cheap XJ8s are easy to find at auction but are they worth the risk ?

Interestingly Ford Mondeos seem to find buyers much more easily than the equivalent Jaguar models, there was a feeding frenzy for a high mileage (156k miles) but immaculate 56 plate Mondeo LX 2 litre petrol automatic.

I've been to a few auctions recently, looking for a new car.
I couldn't believe the prices, but once you add around £300 fees to an £800 motor (BCA), they weren't "that" cheap on the whole..

I love the way auctioneers make money from both buyers and sellers.

£800 for a relatively new one is good for me!

I give you a loan of my "Garry Tank Commander" DVD featuring the Pink Corsa that will cure you of the desire for a Corsa.

yeah, not so much a desire, but i need a car as i've been without one for 3 or 4 months now, and can't afford a 2.8 enigne any more, they seem the best of the small cars, you see them about everywhere, there must be a reason for that... plus i want something i can have some fun with, pretend i'm still 20 lol, lower it etc.

what worries me though, is you bought a gary tank commander dvd?!
