Importing a car from a non EU country..

Hi All

Has anyone had any experience importing a car from a non eu country? I am talking about Guernsey more specifically. Whilst Guernsey is an associate of the European union, they are not actual members.

So if i was to buy a 2nd had car from their, would it be subject to VAT?
What other costs would there be?

I have read somewhere that a car registered other than the UK has to be re-registered onto UK plates (££) requires a new MOT (££) and shed load of paperwork to negotiate and also getting insurance can be problematic. Ooohh and also have to renew road tax.

What seemed like a good idea suddenly seems to have numerous hidden costs.

Does anyone know if any of this is true?

I don't know anything about this but I would have thought importing a car from Guernsey shouldn't have too many problems as it's a crown dependancy. I thought we had free traid with such places.

Depends there was a thread in one forum where a guy was trying to import a Rover 620 from Malta (just before they joined the EU) and ran into massive problems it turned out although they appeared identical to UK spec cars Rover 620's sold in Malta were shipped straight from Honda, MG-Rover had just folded so no compliance documentation from the manufacturers
.
You will need compliance paperwork from the manufacturer and even them may require SVA.

From a quick google, I think it may not be worth it. I even read somewhere that guernsey doesn't even have any form of iva !

The vehicle does not need EU type approval/SVA/IVA if its over ten years old. Registration is easy and cheap. Import duty depends on the purchase of the vehucle.

The things you learn on the net! I had no idea except I knew where it was. Good luck with the import stuff.
