why not get the e61 5 series bmw?

much better than the merc.

I like the c220 car but i tested both before i got my 5 series and if you drive both the c class merc and the bmw 5 series I would be surprised if you buy the merc.

PS. i guess this will start the usual BEC v CEC style arguement.....

Thanks

In my experience the worse thing about Mercs is the dealers, going back to the early 2000's we had a 3 year old C200 we wanted to trade up to a newer model, tried two dealers neither wanted to know us.

We put it down to being dressed casual, and there were suited customers about, one did ring us later, and was most dissapointed when we asked if he thought Lexus would give us our deposit back......

I had a C180 W203 and it went back to the dealer every two weeks for warranty repairs. When i finally took it back and said "Look, i bought a mercedes for reliability because of the mileage so its not doing what i bought it for" they said so what and offered me £2k for the car they sold to me for £6k, six months prior.

Mercedes cars are shocking in my experience, and the dealers / sales people are sharks.

Kindest Regards,
Richard.

I have had a couple, a W211 270cdi e-class and now in a W203 220cdi c-class coupe. My Father has had 190's W202 c-class and now in an ML.

I like them because if you get the right spec they are a nice place to be. I do 30k miles a year and like stuff such as auto box/auto lights/ auto wipers/sunroof/ cruise etc. The seats are good too. Leather with heaters are nice on these cold mornings! The BMW's are nice too but seem to have less kit unless you pay extra for it.

The 270 cdi is a 5 cylinder engine and always sounded 'odd' but if you are looking at 07/08 vintage the 280cdi is 6 cylinder and a nice thing.

My 220cdi is not the most powerful thing in the world but being above the 2000cc threshold it attracts a better milage rate for work and still gives me an easy 50mpg, more on a longer run.

For the servicing I go to a non franchised specialist who has all of the STAR kit to do updates etc. The a service is normally around £150 and the b service around £250.

As for faults, the springs snap....on all of them, the electrics were crap on early W203 models, non MB brake pads squeek. All of the cars I have had, pull to the left. This is a know problem and due to the suspension being set up for LHD cars. There is a fix but the dealers struggle with it. Never really had any other problems apart from service items.

The c class estate is not the biggest in the field but IMHO looks quite nice, especially in SPORT trim.

I also have an older C Class estate; a C220. It's been an excellent car so far. I was a tiny bit disappointed to see the tax pushed it into an upper band but it's still quite reasonable, just not as cheap as my Passat's tax band. Economy is good and bearing in mind it's a small estate - it's plenty big enough. Equipment levels are good - factory xenons, front and rear parking sensors, electric seats, steering wheel remote...etc...

There's some really nice features and thought gone into it. Parts are not that crazy and my experiences of the dealer so far (have only rung to check parts prices) has been really good.

I'm very happy with mine and would definately consider another when I change again.

I dont think you can compare a c class with the 5 series, i thought the 3 series and c class where aimed at the same market with the 5 series and e class being the next size up .
I tested a 530d touring before i bought my e320cdi merc, the bm was nice but the merc has a lot more room and the boot space is a lot bigger. I also found the ride very hard in the bmw ( suppose thats cos im over 40 now ).
We had a new c220 estate as a hire car back in may when in austria on holiday and it was not nice at all, gutless with a 7 speed auto box that never new which gear it wanted to be in. Her indoors had a 320d bmw which was a nice car it did 55mpg but had problems with injectors, and turbo once it got above 80,000 miles.

about 3 years ago i had a v70 d5 volvo and i think if i was to swap the merc now it would be for the new shape v70, my old one was faultless, nice to drive, comfiest seats ive ever had, the d5 diesel is a brilliant engine, powerfull, bags of torque and did low 50 mpg...sometimes wish id never sold it !!
