chuffin airbag just went off

Just been out in my Saab - the airbag warning light came on then 10 minutes later the chuffing drivers seat airbag went off

Just going to change my trousers now - oh and my arm hurts

Maybe I'll brace myself next time the warning light flickers in my own 9-3

Bet it woke you up a bit though!

Got this from http://www.saabcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?s=cfba09c29a612c33d54a169fd44deba4&t=97206&page=2

This recall and TSB was initiated via the NHTSA in the US in 2002 and affects 1995 verts. The control module was determined to be subject to possible leakege by an electrolytic capacitor and abnormal amounts of condensation from the A/C, making it prone to electrical fault. See below:

Results : 1 | All records displayed

Top of Form 2
Make : SAAB
Model : 900
Year : 1995
Manufacturer : SAAB CARS USA, INC.
NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID Number : 02V308000
Recall Date : NOV 14, 2002
Component: AIR BAGS
Potential Number Of Units Affected : 20476
Check to Request Research.

Recalls Summary
Make / Models :
Model/Build Years:
SAAB / 900
1995
Recall Number: 02V308000

Summary:

ON CERTAIN PASSENGER VEHICLES, THE AIR BAG ELECTRONIC CONTROL UNIT (ECU) IS DESIGNED TO SENSE AND DISCRIMINATE FRONTAL IMPACT EVENTS, COMMAND AIR BAG AND SEAT BELT PRETENSIONER DEPLOYMENTS IN A TIMELY MANNER, AND PERFORM CONTINUOUS DIAGNOSTICS OF THE AIR BAG SYSTEM IN THE VEHICLE. DUE TO THE POSSIBLE INSUFFICIENT SEALING OF THE BOTTOM OF AN ELECTROLYTE CAPACITOR, IT IS POSSIBLE FOR IT TO LEAK ELECTROLYTE WITHIN THE AIR BAG ECU. ALSO, IN HIGH HUMIDITY ENVIRONMENTS, THE OPERATION OF THE VEHICLE AIR CONDITIONER CAN CAUSE RAPID COOLING OF THE ECU, WHICH IN TURN MAY CAUSE THE FORMATION OF CONDENSATION WITH THE UNIT.

Consequence:

IF THIS MOISTURE COMES INTO CONTACT WITH THE ELECTROLYTE FROM THE CAPACITOR, IT FORMS A HIGHLY CONDUCTIVE MATERIAL THAT COULD CREATE AN ELECTRICAL SHORT CIRCUIT. THIS ELECTRICAL SHORT COULD TRIGGER THE AIR BAGS AND SEAT BELT PRETENSIONERS.

Remedy:

DEALERS WILL INSTALL A NEW AIR BAG ECU. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN APRIL 4, 2003. OWNERS WHO TAKE THEIR VEHICLES TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER ON AN AGREED UPON SERVICE DATE AND DO NOT RECEIVE THE FREE REMEDY WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME SHOULD CONTACT SAAB AT 1-800-955-9007.

Notes:

SAAB RECALL NO. 15012. ALSO CONTACT THE NATIONAL HIGHWAY TRAFFIC SAFETY ADMINISTRATION'S AUTO SAFETY HOTLINE AT 1-888-DASH-2-DOT (1-888-327-4236).

To see all the documents involved in this recall, including the TSB itself, go here. (link is dead sorry)

Do not assume the SRS light is the airbag. Mine never came on before the recall and did not until mauch later. Tech II indicates it is a faulty seatbelt tensioner sensor in my case.

Cheers

R

Thanks for all that Richard - Whilst the seats don't fit in with those years mentioned, as they are not the original front seats I can't rule out that they might have been stored in a damp place for a while - Ill pull out the airbag ecu and have a look at it to see If I can see anything.

Cheers

Mark

http://www.saabscene.com/forum/threads/129742-passenger-airbag-fault
its 9-3 so may not be relevant...

Last post says loose wire under seat?

Personally I think it'll be a cap thats gone on the ecu have read lots of posts regarding these and knowing how unpredictable they can be especially on older pcb's as there was some poor quality caps around a few years back. We suffered on a few psu's on copiers and some sky boxes also faulted prematurely due to bulging caps then failing.

Hope you get to the bottom of it.

Cheers

Rich

new seat for the saab - when the airbag goes off it splits all the leather in the seat and showers the cabin with bits of foam from the upholstery

Hope Santa brings you some fresh underpants!!!

In all seriousness, you were quite lucky that could be really nasty!

I no longer run Furore Products or Furore Cars Ltd, but would still highly recommend them for Acewell dashes, projector headlights, dominator headlights, indicators, mirrors etc, best prices in the UK! Take a look at http://www.furoreproducts.co.uk/ or find more parts on Ebay, user names furoreltd & furoreproducts, discounts available for LCB users.
Don't forget Stainless Steel Braided brake hoses, made to your exact requirements in any of around 16 colours. http://shop.ebay.co.uk/furoreproducts/m.html?_dmd=1&_ipg=50&_sop=12&_rdc=1

Mark, sounds nasty. Were you driving at the time?
Post Crimble suggest you give Alan or Simon at DCA in Upper Bucklebury a call 01635 860086.
Always generous with their advice they should also be able to supply good second-hand parts at reasonable cost.
If you need any help collecting/despatching let me know.
Cheers, Pewe10

Erm it was the airbag in the SEAT that went off NOT in the steering wheel and even then its "Momo"

Some people can never handle the truth and always try to shoot the messenger instead of taking an honest look in the mirror (its always easier to blame another than to face reality), but secretly they wish they could grow a pair and be the messenger !!!
