corsa 1.3cdti advice/help needed 04 plate

OK so future S.I.L. car ( as above) has the following symtoms.

warning light of Car with spanner in it is on ( and off and on and off etc ) i.e. sometimes it is sometimes it aint.
sometimes it comes on after a few hundred yards, sometimes it's ok after you restart it, sometimes it is always off.
Hand held reader comes up with no DTC's and resets the light.
Laptop elm with proscan ( which is temprimental to connect and not sure I really trust its readings ) has no stored or pending DTC'S. And also turns off the light.
Live data graphs for the egr valve show readings consistent with throttle pedal movement as does the maf readout. The inlet manifold pressure does not seem to vary much at all given any amount of throttle pedal movement either slow or with a quick jab/ high rev. ( but i'm not sure how much i can read into this as it may not be supported ).

Other symptoms are it is sometimes hard to start and then will stall. When it does start there is then a fair bit of black smoke

At times under VERY light throttle ( say 10mph in 1st/2nd ) it kangaroos/hunts/surges ( but not always ).
Again I can simulate this on a Very Light pedal without the car moving.

Finally I'm not sure that the in car temp gauge is working. It is minus 6 here at the moment and after 20 mins the guage shows no movement. Does the temp sender for this gauge have any bearing on the fuel mixture on a diesel. ( I'm not that up on oil burners to be honest.

So far my thoughts are
Water in the diesel ( easy one to check ) but doubtfull.
Egr valve sticky ( need to find out where it is on this engine and how easy it is to remove/clean.) anyone???
Map sensor faulty .

Thats about it folks any advice will be welcomed and thanks in advance.

Could you give it a flipping good blast down the motorway? Sounds to me like a sensor or valve is full of s***e and needs clearing.

Also she's not put in petrol/bio/some other gunk in recently?

Nah just std diesel as far as I know but I will ask. Just been a run in it and it was faultless. Although just before my original post it had a fault light and was hunting on the drive. I can confirm that the engine temp gauge does not work it seems.

Actually if it's as cold as you say it might not have had chance to move, I know in deep winter I can drive most of the way to my parents before it registers (a good 30 miles)

If the cabin gets warm though (and again sometimes it's only managed to get vaguely warm by then) then yeah it's the gague

when it "hunts you can see the trace for the egr valve fluctuate up and down. I not sure if this is the result of the hunting or the cause though??.

Only sensor I can see is at the front of the head pass side and a single wire to it. Does the deisel have a water temp sensor that is linked to /adjust fuel through the ecu??

Ok so today I found 1 faulty/non working glow plug ( would this light the spanner lamp?? )
I also discovered that the " hunting" can be simulted, on the house drive, by gently pressing the throttle pedal and watching the rev counter. It happens between 900 rpm and an estimated 1150 to 1200 rpm only. After that all seems good.
Anyone??
