Turbo
Guys, I have a plan which involves a using a Turbo which i am about to acquire origin/condition unknown, is there anyway of telling if the Turbo is
knackered by a visual inspection/what do I need to look for?

Play in the shaft primarily, and oil residue in the ports. The truth will come whn you run it.

A lot of turbos also can have cracked exhaust housings (look particularly between the internal wastegate port and the exhaust port), although these
will often quite happily run for 50k like that - depends on the price whether it's worth it or not.
As mentioned, play in shaft - in/out as well as side to side. Expect a tiny bit with no oil pressure but anything more and it's worth doing a
rebuild. These cost about £40-50 unless you've got some super fancy turbo.
When you eventually fit it and run the engine, if it's pumping out blue smoke when on boost, it needs a rebuild. If it's not boosting much
at all, then check your pipework for leaks, and if it traces back to the turbo, chances are it's pretty knackered (but you should be able to
tell this visually as there will be obvious damage to the turbines)

As above; NO palpable play in any direction on the compressor shaft AND it needs have a Water as well as oil feed.
Non watercooled turbos are worthless .

Another question, on a turbo with an internal wastegate can you do away with/bypass it and use an external one?

yes you can weld up the wastegate and fit an external one onto the manifold, pre turbo

although there prone to crack and break the weld due to the heat from what people have said, im going to fit a bracket to hold the wastegate shut
phycicaly on mine so it can be run on a internal wastegate too if i sold it.

Can i not remove the actuator and replace that with a solid bar to hold it shut?

A plain bearing turbo will always have some play in the radial direction, even when brand new. This should be fairly small however, and certainly not
enough to allow the compressor to touch the housing. There should be virtually no axial play.
