It's a crafty ploy.
You have to slow down to 10 mph to read the sign.

I attended a 'Speed Awareness' course last week (for the heinous crime of doing 34mph in a 30 limit). They spent almost all the time
telling us how to identify what the speed limits are on a variety of roads. All 25 of us, from all walks of life were even more confused by the end of
it. I had no idea how convoluted (and arbitrary) the whole thing is. Unless you drive at 20mph all the time or have an encyclopaedic knowledge of how
this deeply flawed and over complicated 'system' works, everyone, no matter how law abiding will often get it wrong and break the law.
I'm in the wrong business, confusing the 25 of us for four hours earned them £2000!!!

If there are no signs assume it's a 30, if the side roads have a 30 or less sign you are in a higher limit. How complicated is that ?

Last week I might have assumed it was almost that simple. Sounds to me like you might need to attend a deeply irritating, expensive and confusing four
hour Speed Awareness course

I also did a speed awarness for doing 41 in a 30, on a road that i allways thought was a 40! (last week)
I found the course very interesting, and our instructor, Gerry (very irish accent) was brilliant,
having done the course i beleive my driving, speed awarnes should improve

I thought the rule was .....
Its 30MPH unless
1) there is a sign saying otherwise
2) there are no street lights at which point its national speed limit.
Speed limits mean maximum, you should drive at a speed that is safe for the conditions not the maximum.

+1onsteves coment. mike, thats about right plus if theres speed humps its 20. theres other clues that
help where itsnot nsl.

Speed humps mean 20mph? Thats interesting.
Entering our village, flashing 30mph sign and speed humps...
Very frustrating as they go on for ever - 9 humps over a 500yd distance.
Big scratches on the first one as you enter the village where
a few expensive sumps have been damaged.
Theory is a councillor lives on the road and does not like people going to fast
as they enter the village as he has to get onto the road to leave his drive....
Fair enough, but we believe that the style and frequency of humps
should only be used outside schools.
The Answer for everything, but never the last word....

The sign in the picture is not a valid uk speed limit sign anyway so I would just ignore it from a legal point of view (except that it indicates there
is a school nearby, so I'd probably just slow down anyway).
The fact there are speed humps does not mean its a 20 limit. It must still be signed as a 20 limit (with appropriate repeater signs) or as a 20
'zone' in which case you do not need repeater signs as long as you are never more than 50m from a sign or 'traffic calming
measure' such as a hump or restriction or chicane. You still need signs on entry/exit of the zone though.
The council can have a road assigned as a 30 limit even when it does not have street lights and is not residential (as I found to my cost when done at
40 mph through the industrial estate I work on - no 30 repeaters for 2 miles from the last 30 sign! The only way to know they have done this is
'local knowlege' or allegedly they have to display maps of special allocations (probably in the cellar of the town hall with the lights
off, as in the hitchhikers guide). I'd been driving at 50-60 down the lane assuming it was a national speed limit of 60 for 15 years when they
stopped me (Its a road with a wide lane in each direction and cycle paths to the sides). The only reason I was only doing 40 when I was stopped was
because I saw the police car parked in a strange place on the corner and slowed down in case there had been an accident or some other problem! When I
indicated my suprise that it was a thirty limit the response was 'yeah everyone thinks it national speed limit here' - I suspect they were
a bit low on the booking quota that month.

So someone has to take it up the arse for our "passage" through the toll ?
To go back to the speed awarness course, a big percentage of us passed our test 30 plus years ago, and a lot has changed
I honestly did enjoty the whole course, the instructor was a semi comedian, but very knowledgable, and we ALL get into bad habits, and think we are
the best driver on the road,
99% of ARE NOT!
I did not like paying £95 fo it though!
