mx5 experts...

With my 240z now a long term project I'm selling my current commuter car(a3 tdi quattro). I was going to get something bigger but the long haired boss has said I could have a 'fun car'.

I'm looking at this as its not to far away and seem straight and standard along with a nice spec...

http://www.pistonheads.co.uk/sales/3264716.htm

How much should I be paying for it? Any bits to look out for?

on a normal 45ish mile commute could it do 35mpg driving at normal traffic speeds?

LOL after everything you've said about them! Can't you find one of those S2000's for 1500 quid that you keep mentioning everytime MX5's are mentioned?

None that come in my 2.5k budget, I did get tempted by a leggy one for 3.2k though A s2000 would still get my pick if I was going to chase power, I just want a standard car though.

I know i'll turn ghey driving one but I do like the fact that they don't draw any attention. Also got my eyes on a celica 190 model, 1998/9(curvy) mr2, octavia vrs.

Sourced a nice MX5 for a mate last year But was surprised how many others we viewed that had serious rust issues
We found a nice looking (from a distance) 2002 version but i could put 3 fingers through a hole in the rear
of the one cill

Check for Rust on the rear arches, Cills and underneath

They Handle well and the gearbox is on of the nicest i've used

The garage next to where I work had a 53 plate one in a few weeks ago that needed 2 complete sills! Bit scray and the rest of the car wasnt that much better! I bought a cheapy one late last year for a giggle and couldnt believe how much fun it was! I have had some fun cars in the past Supra's, mk2 MR2, 325 coupe XR4i and loads of other fun stuff but nothing is close to as much fun as the mx5 cant really put my finger on it there just fantastic to drive, but Rust does seem to be a problem.

have a look on here http://www.mx5nutz.com/forum/index.php?act=idx
yes rust is a killer but if you can weld that can make the car a bargain, sills and arches are available and not that expensive.
they are a nice car to drive but fuel economy is not that great

who cares who wins
pass the pork pies

But I thought there were loads of them about for 1.5k????? sorry can't resist

Can I take it we'll hear no more about 'leggy' S2000's next time someone talks about 1K MX5's????

On a more serious note rust is a problem but there are still lots of good ones out there - 35mpg if you drive like a member of the owners club (which you wont) high 20's is more likely but it does depend on what engine to a fair degree

If you can find where I said you can get a leggy one for £1500 ill buy you a pint or two:-)

Cheers for the advise, keep it coming!

Does this seem right price wise?

Has to be a mark 1 (with the pop up lights) unless you wish to take up hairdressing?!
They all suffer sill rot, but as pointed out, it makes the car cheaper and isn't an expensive fix. Imports tend to have better kit on them and less rust. Otherwise identical. Plenty of parts/upgrades around. For that budget you could get a tidy car and have spare to play with. I got mine for £250 on a P plate. No engine and needs sills doing but since I am fitting a Lexus V8 in it, and going widebody, it doesn't matter. Great solid cars.

It's not necessarily local, but I'd be tempted to speak to Andrew at www.autolinkuk.co.uk about the freshly imported white Mk2 that he has sat there with the Mazdaspeed kit. Looks like a winner to me!

Ideally i'd like to find a no real issues cars as i've not got the time at the minute to fix anything up. The one I was looking at has heated leather, LSD, factory upgraded stereo, aircon etc, what other desirable extras can they come with?

I'll give autolink a call too.

Cheers all.

How about a rev2 sw20 MR2 turbo, around 94 with the round light clusters.

Fastest accelerating car I have ever owned once decat'd and zener diode mod on fuel rail pressure, like driving a go cart, 270 BHP with leather and aircon, fantastic cars and as in import no emissions test.

I sold mine for a S4 928 Porsche, another great car which may be in your price range, the fastest car I have ever owned flat out, these are now on the way up especially if you can get a manual.

If you are settled on a MX5, its got to be a really nice MK1, lots of nice touches apart from the pop up lights like the door handles etc.

A much nicer package IMHO

Regards Mark

Good choices but it has to be capable of about 35mpg. I'd prefer a later mx5 for the nicer(IMO) interior!

HIPster trousers can't be worn while driving them mind you.
Of course that's probably not you're primary concern! LOL
CRITical issues have been mentioned above...

As has been said many times before (not by you obviously, in fact the exact opposite! ) a MK1 is a great and classic car - there are plenty of dogs around, but it all depends on your budget and more importantly, what you expect of it.

Mine is a "rough all over - but good all rounder" car and I adore it, as does the missus when the weather is nice, but my little boy (2yrs & 2days old) absolutely loves it to bits! I pick him up from nursery in it, when I can, and he asks in front of the staff as if he's showing off - if I'm in the red car, and then if the roof is down and then when we're in it, he tells me to "go faster dadddy, go really fast"... He's definitely my kid!!! LOL

Yikes. The good news is that they don't do fast, so you can keep the little guy safe at the same time. (!)

OP: What you need to ask yourself, is why she is telling you to go out and get a fun car. There is always a catch. Always.

Always.

She's pre-empting the mid life chrisis, and letting you get a car rather than a mistress?

well had a look at the one I put a link in for.

It was far too rusy for the cash, a fair few niggles and zero movement on price even though it had rusty sills From a main dealer.

Twas very nice inside though and the sort of spec i'd like. If I get an mx5 it'll have to be in the next few weeks before the weather gets better!
