BMW 1 series, petrol or diesel??

Seeking the collectives advice! I am looking for a small, comfortable car for an infrequent, mainly motorway commute, total 10000 miles year. I have decided that an automatic BMW 1 series fits the bill, for lots of reasons. I have the option of a 125 i coupe, 4 years old with a reasonable mileage or a 5 year old 120d that is lower mileage but £1000 more expensive. Over 3 years, the extra fuel for the petrol will eat the £1000 difference. My main concern is whether buying a 3 litre petrol engine will cost me when I come to sell it on as my gut feeling is that a large petrol engine might be unpopular.

Any thoughts?

Thanks

JC

Diesel would be my preference for pretty much all types of road driving these days. As you say it will also be easier to sell on come the time.

Diesel will always hold its money and be easier to sell and the car tax will be cheaper

120d as fuel is only going to go up and selling a 3ltr petrol will be tough.
I just received my new Co. Car 320d Msport and I must say the engine is great and the msport suspension works well.

Before you buy the 1 series - check out the rear seats. Now try and sit in them. From everything I've heard they have no leg room at all and aren't in the slightest bit practical.

I'd go for the silky smooth 6 cylinder petrol over the 4 cylinder tractor engine any day, but then again I hate diesel engines to the point that I would gladly spend the extra on fuel for a petrol. However I'd want the 130i as you get the extra performance with virtually no increase in running costs.

Also note that it won't take much in the way of engine problems on a common rail diesel to devour that £1000 saving. Turbo, injectors, DMF and DPF will all be expensive if/when they need replacement.

Another vote for petrol, and I'd deffo choose a the Coupé over the hatch because it looks so much better to me. As above though I'm really not a Diesel person, if your worried about buying such a big engine why not consider a smaller petrol, I actually think Diesel is actually on the decent now and that alot of people are going back to petrol based on somethings I've read in magazines in waiting rooms.

The wife has a 120d msport auto H/B and it's a great car. Good performance, fuel economy, gets me, her and the 2 kids in (15 & 12 year old) and the weekly shop and I must admit the auto is great!!

Another vote for the petrol here, BMW petrol engines are some of the most efficient around, a guy I know has a Z4 3ltr and regularly gets over 30mpg.

How tall's your family? One of my tests when looking at a car is to put the driver's seat where I'd have it and then go sit in the back, there was no room for my legs back there

Alot of people talking about back seats here but the OP hasn't given any indication that he even needs back seats, which as we all know are the wrong seats to be in unless your spending some money on a chaufer.

Well, we are a family of short @rses! Well, at the moment anyway although kids keep growing at an alarming rate..........

Went for test drives again and the heart vote got it - collecting the 125i coupe later today! That straight 6 is soooooo smooth! The clincher though was my daughters vote from the back seat!!! Thanks for the advice everyone - hadn't even thought of the costs of DPF replacement!
