Car written off category

Heading off on holiday in the wife’s car, she was driving, we were sideswiped by an artic trailer that moved into our lane. We were on what used to be the hard shoulder on a ‘smart’ motorway, no we didn’t get the reg no. The insurance co. has written the car off and wants to make it cat S but I think it should be an N as the damage is to the drivers door and rear quarter panel not to any chassis components. We want to buy it back and I’m thinking it would be less hassle in the future as an N?
Has anyone got experience of this situation.
Thanks.

The Honda Jazz w egot from my MIL got hit up the back at a roundabout, needed a tailgate and bumper only but was cat s. I took teh £1500 and kept the car, just had to get a fresh MoT for the insurance company to show it was "safe" (they changed it to 3rd party until I got the MoT done) But zero issues.
I replaced that car (jazz went to our daughter) with a cat s car. I found pics of the cars damage when it was at copart, it was a bolt on wing, bonnet, light and bumper. It had been repaired etc by a garage. No issues with insurance etc.

Weirdly, about 18months afterr the jazz payout, the insurance company sent us a cheque for £700 plus some interest as they had apparently undervalued it. I wonder if there is/was fear of a "ppi" type thing? Still, more than happy with the extra money....

Just request an independent assessor view it. I had my Cat S turned into an N in 5 minutes when he turned up and realised the bumper bracket (part of the chassis) could be bent straight with an adjustable wrench. The original assessor was reprimanded (allegedly). The insurance gets to lose less if they write it off - they get your 250 quid plus whatever they can auction it for, instead of paying out 3K on paint and repairs. Once mine was an N, I bought it back for 10% and took the rest to repair it. FWIW it was already a Cat N when I got it lol.

Ask the road operator for CCTV of the event, they will keep it for 30 days or so, if it was a smart motorway they'll be monitored and recorded.

At the time we contacted the local, Bedfordshire police who told us it was Thames Valley we needed to talk to, some days later they got back with an email, which I didn't see until we returned home, saying I had to contact National highways; they told me it was too late to see any CCTV as you have to request it within 5 days and records are deleted after 7 days.
May be useful information for someone.

Only real difference between a N & an S is that the S gets recorded on the V5, the N doesn't. My Skoda Citigo EV had about a 5mm dent in the front of the sill (classed as chassis!) so got an S! Hence I think the rear quarter will be regarded as chassis damage. I've had no probs insuring the Skoda or anything else on other cat s or C I've had, only problem comes when selling, but you'd be quids in from the insurance payout if you can do most of the work yourself

I no longer run Furore Products or Furore Cars Ltd, but would still highly recommend them for Acewell dashes, projector headlights, dominator headlights, indicators, mirrors etc, best prices in the UK! Take a look at http://www.furoreproducts.co.uk/ or find more parts on Ebay, user names furoreltd & furoreproducts, discounts available for LCB users.
Don't forget Stainless Steel Braided brake hoses, made to your exact requirements in any of around 16 colours. http://shop.ebay.co.uk/furoreproducts/m.html?_dmd=1&_ipg=50&_sop=12&_rdc=1

Hmm that might be the only visible difference but the inspection criteria are very different. One is just financial loss, the other is structural damage that needs repair, such as chassis damage.

On monocoque chassis the rear quarter is actually part of the structure, and contributes to the chassis strength. If badly damaged, it can compromise the chassis. Hence why cars are often cat S (structural) when they have skin damage on the rear quarter
