J15 -Removal CV joints from the driveshaft

Hi

The next step in my J15 build is to sort the drive shafts but immediately hit a problem

Can anyone tell me how to remove a Ford Fiesta Zetec outer and inner CV joints from the drive shaft?

Outer CV Joint
There are no visible snap rings and I cannot move the shaft sufficiently to release the balls - I am stumped

Inner CV Joint
I have removed the inner CV snap ring but it will not slide off the shaft. Is it now a case of using a puller to remove the joint?

Appreciate any advice from those out there that have done the job

Theres a snap ring inside. Hold the shaft in a vice then good strike with (copper) hammer should knock it off. Might take a few goes but it will go; we knock then off with the shaft still in the 'box and just hand held.

There is a tool for removing the outer joints it is not expensive but is only really needed when the joint is still on the car and space is restricted.

Of you have the shaft off then grip the shaft in vice and use a mallet on the outer joint.

Thanks guys - your suggestions worked a treat, several good hits with my copper hammer and off it came.

Well that is the outer CV off, any suggestions about getting the inner tripod off the shaft or is this a job for a puller?

If you clear out all the grease the location of the split ring becomes obvious.

Hi Jenko,

Yes I have located the slip ring and removed it (copper colored) but the tripod is still firmly on the end
Do you think I could try a puller without damaging anything?

They tend to be very tight on the splines. I use an old chisle l've ground to fit as a drift then tap it off with a big persuading stick.

Thanks for that. So it is just stubbornly tight on the splines.
I will give it a bit of wellie tomorrow and see if it comes off
