I weighed the wheels today

I weighed my new wheels today, Team Dynamics Jet black with 195/50/15 toyo proxes4 16kg , is this heavy or light !

About normal for 15" wheels and 195 tyres!

My standard steel wheels(honda civic) + dunlop SP sports 185/65/R14 weigh 14.8kg each!

my 14s with R888 would weigh 12.7kg. 7.9kg of which is the tyre.

R888s in 195/50/15 weigh 8.8kg, for reference. I believe OZ superleggera 15" rims weigh a shade under 5kg each.

I think it works out that lower profile tires and bigger rims are heaver than high profile tires and smaller rims (but of the same rolling diameter).. hence 13in wheels have a weight advantage.

I'd not worry to much mind... They look nice, and I doubt you will notice the few kg difference.

Indeed, I believe the sidewalls are thicker on low profile tyres which makes them the same or heavier.

For the wheel it's pretty obvious that the major mass of a wheel is at the outside and a larger wheel has a bigger circumference so more of the heavy bit. Spokes are also longer meaning there is more metal (they may also need to be thicker to have the same structural strength/stiffness).

Smaller the better for wheels (assuming you can get your brakes under them) IMO.

My 5,5x13 minilites with yoko's A048 185/60-13 weigh in at 13kg

So compared to Kenton's 17" wheels, my car has a 28kg advantage on wheel tire combo alone

And dont forget, it's rotating mass and unsprung weight, 2 things you like to keep low on a performance car

they're 5" wide. i'm not surprised. if we're playing that game, i'll weigh the wheels off my pushbike...and they're 26"

istr my 17x7 pro race 1s and 205/40/17 r888s are 17kg ish a corner. 16.8kg rings a bell

Adding a 2 inch strip of steel to doesn't add more than a kilo or two so they still win against your 17's, though ACB10's are, I suspect, most of that difference.

Steels and alloys are much closer in weight than most think unless you're spending serious money on the alloys.
