Type 9 Box - Can it Be Uprated? (Now the 'East Lothian Love-In Thread'!)
scootz - 16/9/09 at 07:40 PM

Would like to put 400 (ish) bhp and 300 (ish) ft/lbs from front-engine to rear wheels.

It's a Audi engine, so there are no 'off-the-shelf' boxes.

I've asked previously about 'solutions' to this, but there's nothing obvious!

I know that THESE GUYS do a conversion for Audi engine to Type 9, so perhaps I should turn my question on it's head... can a Type 9 Box be up-rated to take a lot of power? If so, any suggestions who could do the work?

Ta!

Onto a new thread...

Yes, it can indeed. Can easily be uprated to around 300bhp. The quaife will take even more.

Depends on the weight of the car though at the end of the day. I will be running a HD rated to 240bhp with a 330bhp duratec bolted to it. Hopefully it will take the abuse!

Cheers,
David

what about a cossie box ??

Thanks Mr Monkey... glad you caught up with me!

Was this not the T5 box?

madteg - 16/9/09 at 07:48 PM

I have been putting 300 plus through mine for over a year now, this is with two trackdays and 14 runs at santapod, broke a driveshaft and propshaft but my 1600 type 9 is still going strong.

Yep, could be an option

Then I'm back to the bellhousng problem... no-one does a bellhouse for Audi engine to T5 - just the Type 9.

Any idea's how much it would cost to have a 'bespoke' bellhouse machined... surely not as much as a Quaife Type 9, etc!

mcerd1 - 16/9/09 at 07:57 PM

there is this one: linky

and ask them to make ones thats not drilled / finished - then take it to Mr Winter

or what about an adapter plate ?

btw the rwd cossies used the "non-world class" version of the T5,
but you can find a "world class" version in Mustangs and TVR's with rover V8's
another linky

scootz - 16/9/09 at 07:58 PM

From box to bellhouse, or bellhouse to engine?

flak monkey - 16/9/09 at 07:59 PM

You may be suprised.

Would need to be cast, which means a pattern needs to be made, then a sand mould then the part cast.

Plus all the design work and development to get a good casting out of it in the first place.

Wouldnt be cheap. There are 'rapid' prototype casting methods available, but they are also rather expensive.

I would estimate around £1000-1500 to have a custom one cast if you did the design (first off). Be prepared for a few of the first casts to fail due to blow holes or porosity too probably then looking at £150 each plus mod costs for supsequent ones. Then it will need machining front and back, boring to fit the box and release bearing and drilling to suit. Probably another £150-200 on top for the first off. Maybe £50 for each subsequent assuming CNC.

Starts to get expensive unless there is a market for them.

adaptor plate between the engine and any sutable bellhousing that fits the box

Couldn't do that to Sid!

scootz - 16/9/09 at 08:09 PM

Or could I???

I'm sure he'd manage (if you worked out the sizes first)

I there are a few tricks you can use to make it easier (card templates etc....)

but this idea might be better:

scootz - 16/9/09 at 08:17 PM

Yep - that would make sense... see if they'll supply one unfinished on the gearbox side!

mcerd1 - 16/9/09 at 08:20 PM

if you could get the bellhousing undrilled (at the gearbox end at least) it could make to job easier

do you know anyone you could borrow a T5 from ?

as I've got this type 9 in the house just now if you wanted to compair them

(its actually a BGH E8 good for 300+bhp - and no you can't have it )

At last... tempted the wee munchkin out of his engineering hole!

Say hello to Mr Widz everyone... I'll translate for him (at 10p per post!).

mcerd1 - 16/9/09 at 08:30 PM

btw - whats happening in this town today ?

all quiet for weeks - then I've been round to see Sid, come home and seen that orange thing driving around, then got a call from Ian and now your back on the hunt for a rwd gearbox.....

must be something in the air today

DRC INDY 7 - 16/9/09 at 08:43 PM

The T5 box is a lot bigger and a lot more weight but can handle big power outputs

Well that's us told! I see Johns car's back for sale... looks a cracker!

PS - Amy's old (new!) car is safe. I promised I'd not pull another perfectly good car apart only to sell it in bits and I'm sticking to my word... that's why I've gone and bought a Quantum Extreme the other day! It's got a Pinto in it, so I don't feel bad about pulling it out and sticking something modern in it! Yes - that's where the Audi V8 is going! And, Yes - I will be pestering you, Amy, Sid, etc. for help!

widz - 16/9/09 at 09:03 PM

scoots was really quick in that not

whats going to happen to the pinto ?

scootz - 16/9/09 at 09:08 PM

How can you say that... I weighed 110kg at the time! That's 30 more than you... like having a baby elephant on the back of my Kart! Now I'm a svelte 85kg, we'll have to do it all again and see what happens!

Anyway, look at the way I ATTACKED those corners that day... poetry in motion!

Could this be my quickest sale yet... the car hasn't even arrived!

Come and have a look on Monday / Tuesday Robert, I'm told it's a good 'un (refreshed 1k miles ago) and due to me knowing diddly squat about Pinto's, then I'm sure you (or anyone else) will be able to get it off me for peanuts!

PS - When are we going Karting again!

Impossible... there's a certain part of my anatomy that weighs more than that all by itself and I couldn't cut THAT off!

mcerd1 - 16/9/09 at 09:18 PM

I don't really need another engine (I've got 2 complete & 2 dead pinto's as it is), but I'll give you a few £ for it if no one else wants it

I may know of a home for a half decent one - do you think the postage will be expencive ?

scootz - 16/9/09 at 09:23 PM

I'm not seeing a time on that sheet for Mr Widz... I recall him going backwards at one point. DNF?

Maybe he's still on track?

PS - Yes, sorry folks, the thread has taken a bit of a twist (Thread Title amended to reflect). I'm still listening to gearbox advise... and fending off Mr Widz's spurious allegations regarding my crap karting ability!

scootz - 16/9/09 at 09:25 PM

Could do with you looking at it anyway Robert... would maybe help if someone who knows about these things could give me a few pointers!

mcerd1 - 16/9/09 at 09:34 PM

karting is £60 a driver at the moment - next time I hear of any deals going I'll let folk know (prpbably when the weather isn't so good )

I can't rember what happened to him - sometimes the timing gear messes it up.
his best time was on the first heat (2nd best of the day I think)

my best was +0.13" (about 4th I think)

but yours was +2'33"

I'll have a look if you want (give me a ring when you get it) - might not be able to say much without taking it apart though

anyway I'm going to sign off now, I've got to get this drawing finished for Sid, and this is far to distracting

londonsean69 - 16/9/09 at 11:13 PM

Based on your original question, on the other thread, an MT75 (later ford) box can be mated to the Audi 1,8T 20V lump.

I am not 100% certain on what is involved, but a firm (again from the netherlands) called ALphax do the bits.

I have the adaptor plate, but nothing else

Sean

scootz - 16/9/09 at 11:18 PM

Cheers Sean... what sort of power can you put through that box?

mangogrooveworkshop - 17/9/09 at 12:03 AM

Polite Notice
Att Robert
Have you finished the DAX yet?

alistairolsen - 17/9/09 at 07:41 AM

Not opened the link, but is the dutch adaptor a bellhousing or just an adaptor plate?

If its just a plate that bolts to the engine, and the bellhousing on the type 9 then surely its just an adaptor from audi to ford bellhousing patterns?

If so surely a cossie T5 should fit as it has a ford bellhousing pattern.......

TBH I'm not overly sure, but ALPHAX is a member on this forum.

I know a version of the MT75 was also fitted to the 4x4 Sierra variants, including the Cosworths.

Not sure if the only difference was the transfer box, or if they also had uprated internals.

A quick google of "MT75 strength" brought this up about the T5 (borg warner)

Hope that helps
