just cleaned out my shed and i think i struck gold.
lying in the corner was a ring, a bit battered, and looked like brass, anyway after a clean up with some t-cut it looks rather shiny, and has some markings on the bottom maybe 750 and 18 or 181 what have i found and am i rich

Surely if it's your shed, then it's something you lost? So you are at break even?

750 is "standard" 18 carat gold apparently: -

Does it say Elizabeth Duke anywhere on it? In which case you're minted!

will post a pic when camera is charged, its twice as heavy as my wedding ring and that cost almost 300,.......i feel a lambo, maybe a lime green one

minitici - 31/12/08 at 02:51 PM

Knowing my luck the ring would be a plumbing olive

No but you may have enough for a R500 badge then again maybe not.

750 is 75% gold - i.e. 18 carat. Weigh it and then check against the gold spot price here: http://investing.thisismoney.co.uk/companyresearch/53216/Gold/company_prices.html

Price is in USD/troy ounce, where 1 troy ounce = 31.1 grammes.

Remember to multiply by 0.75 as spot prices are for 1000 (i.e. 24 carat) gold.

BTW, you mentioned your wedding ring cost £300. High street jewellers make good money on wedding rings. What they do is buy unpolished blanks from Cookson's, polish them (3 minutes work), send them to the assay office to be stamped (charge: 60p per piece) and then flog them at 300-400% markup.

Anyone looking to get married should really look at getting blanks from cooksons gold online, polish them with a dremel and a bit of that paste polish and you will save yourselves a fortune. You can even get pre-assayed ones (with the 750 stamp) so that you will be able to sell them if the need ever arises (its illegal to sell un-assayed gold as jewellery).

My other half is a jeweller but here stuff is a bit more, ermm, creative: http://www.poppyporter.co.uk/Podium_Gold_1.html
