Transporting a half built car

I need to (possibly) take my car in it's current state to the DVLA for them to inspect it for them to issue me a VIN. I'm struggling a bit for how to do it though. Unfortunately nowhere seems to rent out recovery trucks (hardly surprising but that would have been ideal), although I've now found a company who will lend me a beavertail for £35 but I now need to find a vehicle with a tow bar but nowhere seems to hire them.

what bout van hire? they tend to have a towbar fitted

it is still posible to hire a break down truck but not many people do them now as i was told it was due to insurance issues, it cost me £70 for a day though, another idea, dependant on how far you need to go and for how long, phone you local friendly scrap yard/car breaker and ask them how much if they were to pick it/you up take there and return, may be a good way for them to fill couple of hours while scrap value down

Yeah I thought about that, it's just getting it in there would be a bit tricky?

I've found a company now that has towbars on SWB trannys for £40. Still gonna cost me the best part of £100 just for the DVLA inspection though!!

Can't you give the DVLA a ring and see if they'll come to you?

Won't they need to see it again post SVA/IVA anyway?

I wrote to my local DVLA (Portsmouth) who issued me a VIN prior to SVA. I then trailered the finished, SVA'd car to the DVLA inspection as your not allowed to drive it there (despite the fact you've driven it to SVA ad it's insured etc ).

I do have the fortune of free access to vans and trailers which made this easier.

Either get them to visit you or try calling round the local breakdown/scrappers and see if they'll do it for some beer money.

Why don't you follow the advice in your other thead here and save yourself the trip?
They honestly won't be any the wiser if you make your own vin

They will come out to you to check the car once you have your mac

DVLA man in Manchester actually told me that I could make up my own VIN if I wanted.
If you don't fancy that there seems to be loads of people on Ebay that will transport your kit for you. Think I just tapped in trailer or trailer services.

i made mine up. Sent local office a letter first to propose it and they responded in under 2 days with their agreement.

Its got to be worth a letter.

Seems DVLA Leeds are one of those places that don't like user created VIN's very much.
