It's for this reason that I do not have Outlook Express configured on my computer, I leave everything at my ISP and only look at the mail online. I download attachments only if I know the sender and am expecting the package.
OE won't allow you to open attachments unless you fiddle with settings, so it's not so likely you'll execute a virus downloaded in your
mail.
i use thunderbird (mail client) and firebird (nice web browser) from http://www.mozilla.org because MS seem to leave a few too many holes
about
A couple of them said I had been downloading illegal mp3 files and claimed to be from the FBI, list of files attached, one was saying I had reported
someone as a terrorist and a solicitors letter was attached. My email is web based so they are not actually on my drive but some of them could be
worrying if you were so inclined.

Ran across an interesting utility the other day...
LitePC has some utilities for allowing users to uninstall as much of Windows as they like, great for off-brand browser users
http://www.litepc.com
No affiliation, etc., etc.
I hate Windows and would dump it in a flash if I could. Bloated, resource-hogging, buggy POS!

this closes the messenger service that windows leaves open for back door access to your system.
