Formula 3 car built using fully sustainable components (amazing)
paul the 6th - 7/9/09 at 10:43 AM

Just seen this on bbc news 24 - Formula 3 car which runs on biodiesel attaining 35mpg, the bodywork is made from potato fibre core, low friction lubricants from fuchs, the worlds first race tyres which have excluded the use of polycyclic aromatics (made by Avon), steering wheel is a polymer derived from carrots...

This is fantastic!

It's a good effort.
Some of it's a bit borderline e.g. recycled carbon fibre. It's not like there's lots of carbon fibre out there waiting to be recycled... Do you think they've just bought the CF parts second hand?
Also the soya oil contents is v dodge. Soya production is a very light green- lots of deforestation going on to produce soya plants...

I think this was posted a while back.

It is quite amazing what they can do when they really set their mind to it.

i heard a while ago that there is a lot of carbon fibre waiting to be recycled.

commercial aircraft built 15-20 years asgo used a lot, and as these are now at end of like theres a lot out there.

or so i was told.

There is a lot of CF waiting to be recycled. The problem is, in this ocuntry, it is classified as 'waste', therefore moving it and processing it is tricky. We have one of the best places companies in the world to move the technology forward, but their hands are tied with red tape!

At the moment, all of our CF goes into landfill, which is a crying shame when it can still be used/reused.

Fair enough! Cos otherwise recycled CF is only very borderline because you'ld have to troll round to loads of places to get it!!!

obviously, not everything is going to be made from sustainable or fully recycled bits (anyone else remember the recycled glass cylinder head swindle of 1994?) but in comparison to the rest of the competing teams and other motorsport teams in other series' it's a step in the right direction...

I meant to post this ages ago.

Its a few of the old guys from Warwick manufacturing group.

The Phd students are the guys who were doing formula student a year ahead of me and the lecturer is our project supervisor.

Makes me wish I was still there sometimes

Sadly thay arent alowed to race it as the rules dont allow diesel engines IIRC.
