Job searching is no fun these days. I know i have highly marketable skills and experience but in this market its still proving tough. It doesnt matter what you know if no-one is recruiting.

Good luck.

Yeah, I know how you feel been off since January and didn't work for most of the previous year either, but this is the first time on benefits and have had a right old nightmare.

My situation has been more differcult than normal due to the illness that pushed me out of work in the first place but really the benefit system should be flexible enough to deal with changes.

I have my discussion with the jobcentre on Thursday, I have no proof that I have been applying for jobs as everything I apply for is via Jobserve.com using the online portal and the agency never reply unless your the choosen one.

I have been looking every workday from 8 till late and in 5 months have not received one reply other than a few automated emails. I feel I have wasted 5 months and achieved absolutely nothing.

Cheers
David

although i didn't get as far as that appointment when i was signing on, i think she told me all i had to do was thake in print outs of 2 jobs i'd seen on the internet (proves you were looking) and say you applied.
remember, its quite common for places to not get back to anyone

someone was telling me today one of the job sites actually tells you how many people have applied for any jobs. one job, a part time 15 hours a week job with clinton cards received over 300 applications

omega0684 - 8/9/09 at 06:15 PM

minicooper: i know exactly how you feel mate, i have been out of work threw illness that put me on the sidelines for just under a year. first thing i was asked in my interview with BP was, why have you been out of work for the past 10 months? and then i had to explain all about my illness to them.

blake: i have been on a few sites that show the number of applicants and it can be quite off putting when you see that so many people have applied for one job.

i must have been on and looked threw over 50 websites today alone, i have written them all down that i can use as proof tomorrow although she will probably say that its unacceptable of some rubbish like that, i have all the e-mails from the recruitment agency about BP so i will take them in as well.

Howlor - 8/9/09 at 06:21 PM

We've been looking for good maintenance guys, process technicians and production planners to no avail. Hardly any replys to the adverts. Must be the Mansfield area.

like i was saying, the bird at the job centre when i went in said all i had to do is keep a note oif what ones i saw and what i applied for. thats all the proof she wanted. i wouldn't worry about it too much tbh. if she's not happy, she'll tell you why and you can make it up better for next time

You'll get there in the end. I've been out of work for twelve months and the jobsearch has been soul destroying - to be honest I wasn't really trying that hard until recently as my wife was ill and the consultants had suggested either a brain tumour or multiple sclerosis! She's now been cleared of the nasties though.

I finally got an offer of a twelve month contract the other day (likely to be renewed yearly). Only problem is that I can't start for a couple of months, as I have to be security cleared first. The great thing is that it's in a field that I've been wanting to get into for some time - same work as I've done before but in a different design environment.

Get your CV out to a load of agencies and let them do the work for you.

Couple of things to be mindfull of when looking for work one is not to become a job snob, there are plenty off opportunities out there sometimes you just have to change your mindset. We can all look for what we want to do, in reality for a short term fix also need to look at what we are able to do massive difference I know but where do you start. Remember first and foremost we go to work for money the enjoying it piece is a benefit.

People tend to bombard employers with the same old CV I know just sifted through 300 for 6 vacancies. Have you considered a different tact and hand write a letter on a quality paper a lot more personal, than printing off a standard letter.

Its the little things that make the differences, essential that you have the best CV the best spec letter and do things differently.

11 years of experience in this area more than willing to look at your CV / spec letter if it helps you. U2U me

What about this one; Jobcentreplus ref NCS/39124

I dont think it'll link, but the job description is

ADULT TV CHANNEL PRESENTER.

Succesful applicant required to be semi nude!

cd.thomson - 9/9/09 at 10:56 AM

What im applying to has 91 places for 1200+ applicants , likely to be more this year because of the jobs market.

Nothing like a 7% success rate to keep you up at night

As said before, good luck, and you WILL find something with time.
