I've just started listening to a lot of Tom Waits music and boy does he have some tunes!

I don't like all of the songs but there are some crackers, Time, Gun Street Girl, I hope I don't fall in love, Down town train, ol'55, martha.
I would class this stuff as relatively mainstream.

Some of his stuff is wonderfully cooky, and some is like the sound track to a nighmare, but in a good way!

He is like a cross between Elvis Costello and Nick Cave.

Song writing genius???

genius? possibly - some is very good - raindogs and that other one are some of hisbetter works.

also add Leonard Cohen to the list.
