Hi all!
Need a bit of advice. I have got an 02 plate Mondeo (1.8 duratec) and it has developed a rattle from the front of the engine (somewhere amongst the
serpentine belt) which only occurs at or around idle and only when warm. An ideas?
Cheers
Chris
Waterpump bearings or idler pulley bearings.
Both fairly common

Water pump bearing? - I am guessing a whole new water pump yeah? pricey?
does it sound like a tappet/cam noise if so its the flaps in the inlet manifold. There are a set in plastic flaps that sit in the ports of inlet
manifold they used to be called imrc, inlet manifold running control and they have a bad habit of rattling loose, change the inlet manifold NOW... if
left they break up and go in the engine its game over and they will if left.We have seen loads of them and a few req engines.Bad news the manifolds
arnt cheap, you could chance a 2nd had one .oh and there is a modified crank case breather you will need ad well as the pipes are diffrent sizes.

It isnt a tappetty noise. It sounds too low down in the engine bay and is concentrated at the front of the engine. It is a metallic rattle. My
initial thought was that it was an exhaust heatshield in the lower engine bay or under the front floor. Am hopings its not the manifold. Sounds
really bad.

Can you take the auxilliary belt off and run the engine for a few seconds , have had problems with the tensioners. Make sure you make note of the routing of the belt before removing.
cam belt slack slapping the cover dont drive it till youve checked it ,ive seen loads like this

Its only done 56000 miles. Does that rule out the tensioner?
Chris
Have you pulled the engine cover off to have a proper listen? They are only clipped on, a good tug usually gets them off.
Likewise remove the tray underneath and put the car up on ramps and have a good look and listen with the engine running. Dont get tangled up in the
belt though whatever you do!
Most of the common stuffs been mentioned.
Will do. Thanks everyone. All comments and advice gratefully recieved. Bit of investigating required I think..............
Thanks again.............
Chris
Have a scout around the net and see if your car has a two-piece crank pulley. They fail with a rattle...
