My Ford Focus Tddi needs a cambelt swap. It is the newer version engine with the belt running from the fuel pump sprocket to the camshaft via a
tensioner. Has anyone done one before? Haynes book makes it sound simple enough...Get crank at TDC and lock it, remove the tensioner and remove the
belt. The next bit is to remove the camshaft sprocket which requires a special puller. This will allow the cam to be set using a locking bar. The belt
is then replaced along with the tensioner and the belt temp re-tensioned. You then turn the engine over 6 times to allow the belt to bed into the
sprockets. It's then says to tension the belt fully using a frequency tensioner to listen to the belt...too high freq belt too tight and too low
it's too loose.
My questions are...Is there a need to removed the cam sprocket as I would have thought that as long as the belts have the same tooth pitch then the
timing should remain the same....2nd, any other way of setting the belt tension correctly, suspect it needs to be done correct as the service life of
the belt is 100,000 miles.
give the cam pulley a swift tap and it should break the tapper it sits on,you need to have it floating on a loose tapper to set the tension.there is
an alignment window on the tensioner so just adjust to that with an 8mm alen key.. then tighten everything up.job done 40 mins
Don't know that specific engine/belt set-up but the best recommendation on here was to keep the old belt on and slice it to half its width
removing half then slip the new belt on in its place.
Might be best to line it up at TDC just in case anything goes wrong.
QED if the pulleys are all unflanged and accessible.
