The only part of a car that will provide you with any (ballistic) cover is the engine block! Doors and wings, etc. are passable only if draped in a ballistic blanket, and even then, only if absolutely necessary!

my uncle used to do that sort of thing for the MOD with grenades and things to document which parts came off 1st and what happened on impact

Amazing how fast the cracks travel through glass. Even slowed down that much you still can't see it.
