Mice
liam.mccaffrey - 13/10/09 at 06:56 PM

We put some poison down to repel the mice.
Went in today and the mices had diligently disguised the trays of poison, all 6 of them.

I assume they are trying to hide the 'food' source.

Is this normal for rodents?

cd.thomson - 13/10/09 at 07:03 PM

noooooo

catch and release!

BenB - 13/10/09 at 07:06 PM

Mix the poison with peanut butter. Works every time. I really like mice but not in my house!

theconrodkid - 13/10/09 at 07:09 PM

a wooden box with a ramp up the side and some bait inside, once caught you can release them a fair distance away and have a warm feeling inside you all day

liam.mccaffrey - 13/10/09 at 07:21 PM

I am sorry i have tried humane traps for weeks now to no avail.

They have already destroyed about 2000 quids worth of stuff so forgive my impatience

Or shooting fish in a barrel spring to mind

I know which one i would rather do

rusty nuts - 13/10/09 at 07:36 PM

A bit of Mars bar in a trap will work , they can't resist it. Sod being humane

perksy - 13/10/09 at 07:37 PM

Bait the trap/s with Mars Bar and then release them back into the wild

They seem to like the Sugar in the Mars Bars

flibble - 13/10/09 at 07:50 PM

3rd for mars bars^^ you also get the joy of releasing them through your ex bosses letterbox when he's on holiday... oooh how I laughed

Benzine - 13/10/09 at 07:52 PM

Introduce a species that will eat all the mice. Then introduce another species to wipe out that species. Keep going until you've reached 'human' and you will have won!

Ninehigh - 13/10/09 at 08:09 PM

+1, get a cat

My brother had rats once, they kept away from the normal bait too...

Chocolate covered raisins worked for us as bait.

We've had mice a couple of times - the first lot ate a lot of poison and eventually went. The second ones didn't touch the poison but couldn't resist getting their necks broken for the chance of a chocolate raisin!

JoelP - 13/10/09 at 08:22 PM

i too gave up on the humane traps. Waste of time letting them go, got a few nipper traps with peanut butter, got em that night!

If its in your house, you need to sweep the kitchen floor every evening, make sure there is no food accessible anywhere, and no source of moisture. Bear in mind they will eat soap and candles too.

rallyingden - 13/10/09 at 08:26 PM

Another vote for mars bar and a good spring trap to get a spike through the throat of the little B*$****$

liam.mccaffrey - 13/10/09 at 08:33 PM

no its in a storage building and they eaten all my furniture

Thanks for the advice

Is it normal for them to disguise the bait though? Never heard of this, they have piled leaves, twigs fluff etc expertly exactly covering the footprint of the 6 bait trays.

David Jenkins - 13/10/09 at 09:05 PM

We had a lot of success with those chocolate drops my wife uses in cooking - similar idea to the Mars bar. Apparently mice prefer chocolate to cheese...

coozer - 13/10/09 at 09:18 PM

We had a 3kg bag of Bakers dog food in the cupboard and wor lass was at a total loss as to how the unopened bag was completely empty. Before she took it back to Tesco's I pointed out the tiny hole in the bottom....

So, neck breaking traps with a bit of dog food on...

owelly - 13/10/09 at 09:28 PM

Another vote for those cheap nipper traps and melt some Mars bar onto them.
I also spent a fortune (depends on what you call a fortune I supose) on various humane traps. I caught six or so mice in 6 weeks but the little critters were still munching through my underfloor insulation. Then I got mad. A pack of 4 Nipper traps and I caught 4 mice in half an hour. I emptied them and reloaded. Another 4 before morning. I had to bin some of the traps as they were getting splattery but I just bought another pack. Repeat until mouse free........it took me about a week and I lost count of the amount of mice I caught but I've not had any trouble for the past three years. I think they must posted-up a warning on the mouse interweb.

RickRick - 13/10/09 at 09:50 PM

i think my 3 cat's are broken they bring mice home give them a beating, then let them go and rest ready for round 2 cats don't get rid of mice just make them bleed a bit

turbodisplay - 13/10/09 at 10:15 PM

What's a sanke ? Little Nipper with a peanut on the prongs, our hardware shop does 4 for £1 you can throw the trap with the mouse in they are so cheap

miikae - 13/10/09 at 11:29 PM

My cat usualy gets atleast one mouse or rat a light and he leaves one of there organs on the door step to prove he is worth his tinned food.

But he failed last christmas when they tucked in to my new Cobra Roadster 7s.

mine too! i got 2 cats, one of them's scared of everything, and the other one looks at the mouse and wanders off (only if they're indoors though, he'll chase mice outside for hours... and bring them in) hopeless lol

after the last time, i picked up my coat (where i left it on the sofa) the next morning, and the mouse was asleep in my coat!

Ultimate mouse trap. 1, 5 gallon pail fill half full with water and antifreeze mix, take an old soda can punch a hole in the top and bottom and but a piece of 1/8" wire through the can, place peanut butter around the can, hook the wire to both sides of the pail, now take a piece of wood and place it at an angle (like a ladder) to the top of the pail.
Mouse climbs up the wood jumps onto the can which rotates, mouse falls in the water and drowns, works all winter, won't freeze and will collect several mice.

Dangle_kt - 14/10/09 at 05:25 AM

We have found that killing them with snappy traps s the Only way, chocolate works well those muselea bars with chocolate on were my best bate.

We get them regularly, as next doors is like a tramps house but since buying one of those funny sonic plug in devises, not the cheap ones mind. We have had no more problems.

If you get really desperate you can buy those sticky sheets, but they are banned in most countries for being too cruel. Uk allows them but the mouse dies of blood loss and stress by trying to chew there own limbs off to get free or ripping their own skin off.

Thats not something I've seen or heard of before
Poison gets my vote though - and when you find where they are getting in , fill the gaps with silicon (if they try to chew though it , it will poison them )
I tried traps but they totally ignored them

A man walks into the Patent Office to register his new invetion.

"What have you got"? said the man at the desk.

"A new type of mouse trap."

"Show me."

The man takes out a wedge shaped piece of wood with a razor blade sticking up from the top edge.
He places it on the desk and puts a piece of cheese in front of it.

"How does that work then" said the patent man.

"The mouse walks up the wedge, looks over the top at the cheese, and cuts it's throat."

"That will never work. That part of a mouse is the toughest piece of skin on its whole body.

One week later he's back.

"I've re-designed it," he said to the man at the desk,
and took from his bag a wedge of wood, with a razor blade on the top edge, but no cheese.

"How does that work then?"

Ah! said the man with a confident smile.
The mouse walks up the wedge of wood, looks over the top,
looks left, looks right, left, right, and says... "Where's the 'kin cheese gone."

I'll get my coat.

woodster - 14/10/09 at 09:23 AM

little nipper trap and a bit of jaffa cake ......... 6-0 to the woodster

flak monkey - 14/10/09 at 09:26 AM

Jep the only way is to kill them.

Poisoning is mean and they stagger around for ages.

Either get a proper old fashioned quick kill trap and bait with peanut butter or choc. You can get electric ones too.

Or do what I do and shoot them, if they arent on your property option 2 might not be feasible though.

swanny - 14/10/09 at 11:42 AM

we've got two cats who regularly bring mice, birds and frogs in.

one cat will play for ages with a mouse but not ever try to kill it.

other old fat cat (and ex rescue) cat which watch from a distance until bored then steam over and eat the thing whole.

he always leaves one organ on the floor, dont know what it is, must be something they sick up, because having watched him eat a mouse its head first and no time for 'carving'

It's possibly the stomach sack or the gall bladder as they both can contain nasty stuff, so those cats aint daft are they.

Quite - I tried those humane traps once. Got one first go, went to let the blighter out to freedom and he dropped out dead. The mouse and every surface of the inside of the trap was covered in mouse poo. So the little mousey had spent its last night crapping itself in terror trying to get out of, well, what became its coffin. Killed by fear, exhaustion and/or being poisoned by its own excrement. I've never felt quite so bad for the little fellows when they just get their necks broken instantly! And besides, after that they learnt to empty the humane traps without getting caught anyway - never did get another one that way.

Liam

mistergrumpy - 14/10/09 at 02:14 PM

Nah I've seen mice get out of humane traps and as said if you don't tend to them they just perish inside.
When I was in Iraq their used to be loads in our tent so I got some traps from the Padre (who had loads of little mice drawn on his wall with crosses through them ) staked them with chocolate and that was it. I was up all night emptying the bleeders. Just make sure you get a big trap as a few of mine just crippled and left them screeching, mind a fair few of them exploded too! Mice attract snakes remember and you don't want that

02GF74 - 14/10/09 at 04:32 PM

when I returned from finland, I found that some bags of pasta under the stairs had been eaten!! (yeah, I know I shouldn't have put them there).

Went to local hardware store and bought two of those plastic spring taps. Put them in and within an hour got two mice.

repeated this 2 more times until no longer caught any.

on one occassion, just the head was left, no body!!! no idea where that walked off to!!

also my cat decide to take a look when I was emptying the trap, I show her the dead mouse and as quick as a flash, it is in her gob with the tail handing out (who remembers the Goodies mouse vole episode?) I grabbed that tail and managed to get the mouse out for disposal.

The 2 traps are still there, untriggered for nearly a year!!

Would you eat year old mars bar?

welderman - 15/10/09 at 10:26 AM

we have rats on a regular basis at work, theres a train line at the back of the workshop, this week we have had 3 babies about 6" long, mum and dad or the big fooooking big barstewards we call them 10"+ are clever sods and we never get the buggers, 2 traps one basket type and one big nipper, that works every time.
We also have human remains from time to time as the unmanned level crossing is ideal for suicide.
lol, there was a murder too a few weeks ago.
