What magazine subscription
smart51 - 7/11/09 at 09:37 PM

Auntie-in-law wants to buy me a magazine subscription for a year as a Christmas present, which is nice. She asks which one do I want. Trouble is I haven't looked at any for a while.

I'm interested in Kit Cars, DIY car maintenance and looking after / repairing older cars, how cars work and can be improved. What titles do you recommend?

PPC

I nearly always buy CKC (Complete Kit Car) and enjoy a good read. PPC would suit your list better though!

BenB - 7/11/09 at 10:42 PM

PPC is good though occasionally it goes on a serious diet and you get about 4 articles!!! Some more each month wouldn't go unmissed....
Especially when a certain LBer writes very amusing pieces for PPC!!!

I have TKC and its a bit crap !

Yet another vote for PPC, only one I subscribe to. Ray

Kit car mags are rubbish IMO, I flick through them in Tesco and then buy my favorites....

PPC, was subscribed but I've gone off it a bit due to the 4x4 project atm, will buy it still tho
ClassicFord
Total Off Road

Flick through FastFord sometimes, waiting to see my MNR in it its coming after having its photo'd and asking me about it... I'll let you know when

We have a sub to Classic Ford - -brilliant mag, loads of rebuild/ remodel/ develop articles, plenty of cross over material for any ford based kit lover. Has useful ads, lots of decent pics and there is a lot of reading in it -not the usual caption and hype of a thinlydisguised advert that some of the mags do.

Had a years sub to Complete Kit Car bought at a show and it was so bad I complained and the bloke offered me my money back I told him to have a peep at Classic Ford next time he was in Smiths!!

Yeah WTF is going on ?

The 2 (?) pieces by our very own resident freelance loony have been better quality than anything else in there by far, had me laughing out loud
Also the stuff he writes about is exactly the stuff I want to read about yet for the last 2 issues he's not been in, but the American bloke talking about a load of cars I've never heard of is given a 2 page spread ?!?!

Seriously, someone needs to have a word with the mags editor..

In fact, I'm off to write an email..

alistairolsen - 8/11/09 at 01:46 AM

Danozeman - 8/11/09 at 09:39 AM

EVO is a very good read if your interested in new sportscars too. The quality of writing and quantity of articles is way above most productions.

Mountain Bike Spotter monthly or playboy or Classic Ford or Me and my pony.

richardR1 - 8/11/09 at 12:14 PM

PPC or Retro Cars for me

owelly - 8/11/09 at 02:54 PM

Here's where I stand (just here near the dining table)...............

I was spending a small fortune on various magazines every month. I was picking up most of the Kit Car stuff, Retro Cars, Practical Classics, a pile of the 4x4 stuff (I like my Landies/Rangies), Mini stuff, Ford Stuff, you get the idea. I once added-up it had cost me over £50 in one month in whatever random mag had taken my fancy. That £50 would be better spent on chips, beer, toys for the garage, or a subscription to just one mag. So, I went out to WHSmiths and bought just about every mag that was on my list. I read each mag and put them in three piles. The 'NO' pile, the 'POSSIBLE' and the 'VERY POSSIBLE'.
I then whittled it down to just a few mags. The next month I only bought the mags on my shortlist. I seem to remember it was PPC, Retro Cars and one of the Kit titles. That month, the kit mag was full of very expensive cars and hardly any hands-on content. Retro Cars had an in depth article on how to wire spotlights and it included how to earth the relay by wrapping the wire around a self tapper.....

I subscribed to PPC immediately.

I'll also add, PPC has, in my opinion, off-months. There has been issues where I've had a flick-through and apart from the regular stuff, there's not been a great deal to interest me (I'm thinking the American stuff and expensive motors/projects) but I still subscribe. And I still have to pay for my subs even though they have used a few of my words in the Staff Cars!
There will be stuff that floats other folks boats but not always mine but to get exactly what I want to read, I'd have to write it all myself. But then it would be a waste of time for me to buy the mag as I would already know what was in it.......
