Motorway signs - why bother??
MK9R - 10/11/09 at 07:44 AM

Why spend a fortune installing the matrix signs all down the motorways but don't bother informing us what's a head! At 6.45am I went past a sign saying conjestion at J15 (about 20 miles away), 4 miles from J15 motorway is stationary as its shut! (Turns out motorway was shut at 6am, so WTF not tell us and we will go another way! Now been stuck for an hour and still 2.5miles from junction! Ggggrrrrrrr!

It's not just the matrix signs - when we had the summer floods down here in 2007, I left work near Oxford early to get home to Swindon - checked which roads were shut and open before I went, and the travel sites had them the wrong way round - they didn't say the A420 was closed until 8 in the evening, I'd been stuck on it since 3! The route they'd said was closed, was passable all day!

The matrix signs can be a right pain tho - there was one on the M4 a while back showing a 50 sign for roadworks when there weren't any - it was on for 4 days! Makes you wonder what all those traffic officers are thinking about as they're tootling along....

Its not just the signs. I often make the mistake of listening to local radio traffic reports. Without fail the opening words are always 'looking quite clear on the roads today.... we have no major closures.... apart from.....' and then they tell you the road you are driving along is closed, or the traffic jam you are in does not exist. Personally I like the ones on the M25 that say 'Congestion at next Junction'. At 02:00hrs - 04:00hrs when its possible that I might be the only one on the road. (around heathrow area)

There are also the "advisory speed signs" in the centre barriers which I have frequently seen on saying 60, 50, 40 or whatever & have never actually seen a problem, they are however never advising 40 or less when i arrive on the back of a stationary jam at around 70 mph
I once drove about 50 - 60 miles down the M40 with 40 mph signs on, never once came under 70 & never saw a problem, then got a "End" sign WTF!!!!!

I don't think it is the signs that are at fault but the numpties that write the messages on them.
