Speed cam van not in normal location
Moorron - 11/11/09 at 01:57 PM

Luckily i was doing the right speed but i have a question regarding police speed cam vans.

As far as i am aware they park in one location which has a few painted lines above and below that location and they are used in the photo to prove the distance/setup of the vans camera. But today one of these vans was about 100 meters away around the next corner.

Can they still collect the date used to send a ticket out? , it was parked up on a kerb and not in the layby's provided for them.

Is this a new tactic or have i got it wrong and they can park anywhere.

Cheers

in not so sunny scunny
they use a tripod mounted camera about a meter high at the road side and a people carrier or van in a road close by
money grabbing sh*tbags

If I remember rightly they must be parked legally and not sure that half on the curb is legal??
I recently had one that I thought had got me and he was deffinately illegally parked. I pulled up, got out and photographed it from all angles. The operater wasn't happy about it but I never heard anything else about it!

do they have to have some certain markings on them? like how speed cameras have to have flouorescent paint on the back?

it was parked on a raised kerb, over a bridge so on the tarmac part but not where a car would be allowed, it was marked as a speed van.

Around here they have purpose built layby's with a few white lines on the road. But for a few days in a row now its been down the road.

If i catch them there tomorrow i will stop and photo it just incase.

sounds like a new tactic then round here, trying to catch people off guard. Prop knowing people are too scared to contest them nowadays so trying to get a nice xmas bonus.

Our closest regular spot, around 200yds from home, is the entrance to a private fishing pond, I often wish I had the key to the gate and just sit there with indicator on waiting to pull in.

There was talk of a horsebox been used in Derbyshire at one time, I have seen what looked soooooooooo much like a camper van it was unreal collecting taxes.

One final point from me, I do not for one minute condone speeding, what does get my back up is they park for revenue not safety, if they are near a busy junction, pedestrian area, school, great they have my 100% support, but zillions of miles from anywhere on a straight road behind a bush, sorry its cash collection only and absolutely zero safety, my opinion will never change on this.

Convince me if you can.

Nice one on the A30 last weekend, where the road goes by Brown Willy. Basically absolutely nothing up there, no junctions, just normal wet, bleak and pretty dismal Cornwall. Tripod mounted camera with the attendant car neatly positioned behind the gorse. Nice.

As the other poster says, put this rig on the approach to a blind junction, or an approach to town, I'm happy...

Shocking tactics - trying to catch people speeding in areas other than where they (the anti-fun police) normally are - disgraceful - its just not cricket!!!

dont different cameras have different abilities ?? ie calculate appraching speed and some that calculate via marking ie distance covered

Surely that's illegal as it's blocking the owner's right of way?

Nothing to stop you sitting there with your indicator on anyhow....

Who/what is Brown Willy? (I hope it isn't a 'what' )

Iirc they have to publish the sites where mobile cameras (of any kind) will be sited. Plus I found a rule that they're not allowed to put them on roads where speeding is dangerous!
I fully agree with cameras near schools, blind bends etc but on clear open roads?
