
The cambelt snapped on my wifes 1.8d fiesta today...
Its a 1995 mk4,I take it the engine is fubar...
few bent valves, maybe some cracked guides. 2-3 nights work, £50 of machining max, £50-300 in parts depending on damage.
Fixed my folks ecotec for about £250 over 2 nights when its belt snapped
only thing to do is take the head off and see what the score is
if its a 16 valve then the valves are small and easy bent without damaging the piston. They don't tend to snap fortunately, just buckle.

It might be, then again you might be lucky and only have one or two snapped valves....
Time to take the head off!
don't cut the exhaust valves btw, they may be hollow & filled with sodum, that explodes in water
why not to feed sodum water linky

they normal cause a lot of damage,broken cams and bearing caps,guides etc,best to get another head

you be lucky if some of the cam caps have not snapped with it being a 8 valve the valves are set straight in the head so the piston hits the head of
the valve fully
Take of the cam cover and inspect the caps before you go any further if they look ok then try a belt on before you take the head off you never know
may have got away with it

We've seen a few & they do like to do the wrecking job properly, one was fettled on a real budget. S/H valves & cam & the middle bearing cap was welded back together! The bearing for that cap needed a bit scaping to get it to clear properly & it ran great for years after, it was even considered as being fit for an old 1,8D!
Broken cams, bent valves, broken bearing caps and broken bore wall for the cam followers are all common damage on the 1.8. Best bet if you can find one is a S/H head . Have done dozens and have never known one without serious damage to the head. Pistons are normally OK.
