Weather/roads - Kent to Liverpool
Simon - 4/1/10 at 10:53 PM

Chaps,

I'm supposed to be going to a funeral (of aunt/on Xmas day) in Liverpool on Wednesday and looking at the weather, it's not looking very promising.

Our plan is to travel up Tues evening (from Kent) and stay at one of my cousins, go to funeral on Wed, then drive home asap.

According to weather folk, it looks like it's going to be quite horrible.

Are any of you on the M1/M6 that can give more accurate descriptions of road conds as mother in law looking after the boys and we don't want to get stuck up North.

If I can't make that one, I may have to go to another in Wales (another aunt on New Years Day).

Ta very much

ATB

Simon

Can confirm same, even the back roads here are ok, A49 is clear, a51 a34 in the stone area also tested and fine, back roads slippy in places but totally drivable.

Just had a call from a service engineer coming down to lynn from Manchester and now can't make it.

Snake pass is shut, as is the road to the M62. He left home at 5:30 and has done 4 miles when he called me at 8:30, so abandoned the cart and walked home.

Apparently had 8" of snow in Manchester overnight....

Bad in Manchester daughter in Droylsden snowed in, took her neighbour an hour to get off thier estate in a 4x4.
Here in Stoke snowing very heavily, 2 mile queue down the main road from my house.
Cheers,

I live in Liverpool and its pretty bad here, but has just started raining/sleeting so might clear. I work in manchester and only bothered going one junction on m62 before giving up. 1 day annual leave wasted...

Phil.J - 5/1/10 at 09:05 AM

Fairly adjacent to M6 J12 and it's just started to snow heavily onto a dry surface, so will stick if it keeps snowing. Forcast is for more snow.

I'm still on 2009 annual leave until monday the 11th.
Im known for making bad decisions sometimes, but right now that doesn't seem like one of them.
Took the wee one down to the bus stop for the school bus (part of the solution, not part of the problem...), got as far as 9.10 to be told there were no buses.

Walked back home, dug the car out, slithered down to the school (roads a disgrace all the way), got to the school to be told that the heating has just come on and they are sending them home.

We don't winter well in the uk, do we ?

jollygreengiant - 5/1/10 at 10:03 AM

Just started (since about 7am) snowing here in Northamptonshire. Radio's reporting problems on M6 J3 area. A14 J7 / J8 area stuffed up due to comuters who think they know how to drive on it (apparently started snowing just after 5am).

i've just come over from the wirral to southport , through liverpool and its is now getting pretty bad, a 45 minute journey just took 2+ hours. and it looks like its getting worse/heavier. personally i'd give it a miss if i could. unless we have a good thaw overnight which isnt likely according to the forecast

Peteff - 5/1/10 at 10:57 AM

We've just been looking at jam cams at local cameras and it doesn't look good round here.

Nice to see the word Winter used as a verb.

iank - 5/1/10 at 11:20 AM

Pah, it's only that we're not used to it. The weather itself isn't at all bad.

Check out Canada at the moment!

Snowed in here at J29a M1, M1 moving, just all the roads around grid locked.

MikeR - 5/1/10 at 11:58 AM

M6 J3 was having barriers repaired from yesterdays accident. should be ok later.

Sat by M6 J2 at the moment (office is meters from the junction). We're getting very very light snow, its not sticking. Forecast heavy snow from 3pm for a few hours.

(just turned round and looked out of the window - its stopped snowing).

Simon - 5/1/10 at 04:58 PM

Cheers Chaps - have decided to give it a miss, unfortunately
