Just wondering if anyone could give me an idea of where in Blackpool or surrounding areas (Fylde & Wyre) is decent area to rent in and approximate rental costs for say a one bedroom apartment or 2 bed house. No need for a garage, just not a 'rough' area.

St Annes is ok. My wifes sister lives there and as a matter of fact owns a number of properties that they rent out.

Sat writing this from a Blackpool Hotel room...

Been up here for meetings on our customer's site on and off for about 7 months now.

When we go out for meals, it's always to either Poulton or St Annes. Unlike the majority of Blackpool proper, they seem pretty nice and have decent places to eat out.

FWIW, Most of the customer staff I've met seem to either live out towards these areas or over towards Preston.

Why would you want to live there? My oldest daughter moved there, and then back after 2 months, couldn't cope with the rubbish on the streets and the general roudiness of people, both local and visitors. Not a nice area

a job has come up which I am looking to apply for but am just trying to determine if it would make financial sense.

Blackpool was a hole when I was there and seemed to be getting worse over the infrequent as possible visits to see parents/mates (weddings deaths and marriages only)

We lived around Normoss, which was OK, schooled in Poulton and had mates scattered pretty much to all corners of the Fylde

Poulton used to be OK
(but I believe was getting expensive)
St Annes and Lytham used to be pretty posh (and priced accordingly...though did manage to afford a damp ridden flat there for a very short while)
Bispham used to be OK and I think a couple of my mates (both professionals, wed, settled with sproglets moved there) so must still be OK

I spent some time in Thornton/Cleveleys which is not too far away for a commute (unless the traffic situation has changed- we are talking over 20 years ago so could well be very different by now!) and was pretty quiet back then, was fairly cheap there at the time and no troubles as far as I can recall (though things may have changed since then)

Areas to avoid (or good places to score or find the stuff you have had stolen ;-) based on 20 years ago's experience )
Town centre
Anywhere within staggering distance of Devonshire road (noted by Hi rise flats and abundant junkies)
Grange park (anywhere whithin the dark circle that was Dinmore avenue)

Things may have changed since then though (doubt it)

If you name places you are looking at I'm sure it will trigger memories :-)

As Robocog, I used to live near Normanton, which was OK (though there was a dodgy estate not too far away, as is always the case).

Decent enough area and far enough away from the summer dross when needed. Parts of the place are a complete hole, but there are others that are actually quite nice and there's always plenty to do for fun in the area.

ETA - Grange Park, that was across the main road from where we lived. If you go there and spot the b******d who nicked my mountain bike from the garage tell him thanks - my mum decided to buy me a DT50 as a means of getting to 6th form as a replacement (I didn;t settle well into Blackpool and it was probably a sweetener on the deal of me staying there to finish college)

The M55 and M6 provide a quick escape route?

...when they're both not gridlocked in rush hour...

no, not the clubbing type...

Something positive .
It's only a relatively short drive to some stunning scenery if you head north or east
(eg lakes)

Last time I "went back home" I took Mrs Cog
Mrs was blown away by the cheapness of shoes...oh and she quite liked the chips n mushy pees, but did comment she couldn't live there (not just for mother in law avoidance reasons)
I would suspect that neither of these are major attractions worth you moving there for to have on tap

Having said that...it was where I was born and raised and had some real good mates and had both good and bad times there

I suspect it's not too unlike any other big touristy seasonal seaside town bestowed with crap weather and unsavoury visitors

Avoid the town where necessary

Plenty of more ruraly bits to choose to live and explore not too far out that I have fond memories of visiting mates houses (Knott End, Stalmine, Preesall, Staining)
got to check out Bonds Ice Cream in Elswick if you do end up there
V fond memories of longer bike rides out with mates to get an ice cream and a complete contrast to the town
