something to do!
Miks15 - 9/2/10 at 09:52 AM

sometimes when im sat at home whilst i uni i quickly get bored. I feel like i need something to do, something that will give me a sense of achievement!

So what can anyone suggest that is fairly cheap? something that i can do in a small space and doesnt take up much room. Can be absolutly anything! Just something to keep me entertained!

Cheers Guys

Mikkel

Build a 1:18 scale replica of your car. Out of student stuff...... I'm thinking empty beer cans, instant noodles and dirty clothes*

*Other clichéd student items are also available

tegwin - 9/2/10 at 10:10 AM

Get yourself some airfix type models... some of them are pretty challenging..... Or a decent but abused RC car off ebay and rebuild it... modify it etc...

Or learn a new skill..... learn to write PHP or something... :p

vinny1275 - 9/2/10 at 10:11 AM

teach yourself how to play an instument? Get a cheap tatty guitar or something....

dan8400 - 9/2/10 at 10:13 AM

bi22le - 9/2/10 at 10:15 AM

over the years i have learnt how to do loads of things. Normally what my friends can already do some they cant. These include at various levels; going cross eyed, wiggling my ears, juggling, whistling loudly with any combination of two, three or four fingers, devil stick juggling, card throwing, playing a digirydoo (cant spell it though!). Just for starters! They are all fun, good sense of achievement, small and cheap!
You could always work out doing situps, press ups and things. I can do a one hand press up too!

couch22k - 9/2/10 at 10:18 AM

Agree with tegwin learn a new skill...... try your left hand

Miks15 - 9/2/10 at 10:22 AM

Thanks for all the input guys, will look into the RC car or possibly the guitar! Played guitar ages ago in primary school, would be nice to pick it up again

as for the left hand thing, learnt that a while back, good with a bit of variation!

dan8400 - 9/2/10 at 10:22 AM

Build a v8 from R/C car parts. See you tube. There is even a v12 on there!! Very cool

Build a car!! (from paper)

http://www.ne.jp/asahi/shift-down/austin/papermodel/papermodel.htm
There are quite a few print out and make car plans if you look around.

Or I built a 'billings' model boat (wooden kit). They are quire expensive kits to buy, but in terms of £/hr, pretty cheap!

Hugh.

Miks15 - 9/2/10 at 10:59 AM

those paper models look pretty cool, although also look very fiddly!

Some sort of model would be good

ashg - 9/2/10 at 11:24 AM

agreed 6foot blond one

Miks15 - 9/2/10 at 11:27 AM

im really interested in the guitar now, can anyone recomend anything to look for?

Im thinking just an old 2nd hand acoustic with some basic instructions (cant really remember much from when i played a little 8 years ago!

Learn the Didgeridoo.

Cheap starter is a bit of 32 or 38mm plastic waste water pipe from B&Q for £2.95 for 2 metres.

Cut to about 51" and sand / de-bur the mouth end.
Learn to play it.
Its VERY relaxing
Its Unusual
Its Different
It will annoy the F**k out of people who dont like it.
It takes up No space whatsoever.
There is a small but very good Didge Scene in the UK with several festivals (usually 20-200 people) a year. Mostly very friendly types. Even if they are a bit laid back etc.

Try to aviod buying a "fairtrade" didge. Best to buy a UK Split didge, may not be authentic, but they are usually a lot better than the Indonesian imports, that are not very good. Guess how I know!
Termite Eaten / Bored Austrailian wood ones will cost more like £100+.

Start with a bit of plastic Pipe, its cheap as chips and will give you hours of relaxing fun.

Search YouTube for Colin's Didge lessons. they will help a lot, especially with the circular breathing.
Start here. Cloin is a leading Light in the UK, and very knowlegable.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UmS7RlcIAqU

Above all have fun.

Oh top tip... DONT try too hard, Dont use too much pressure / breath... Above all RELAX...and have FUN!

EDIT:

Also look at this site. there is some useful tips and info in the Rythms pages.
http://www.baydidge.com/
They are a good bunch even if they are a long way away. Been to their summer camp, at a Stone Circle in Yorkshire.
Excellent fun weekend for next to nothing... Very Locost types!

ashg - 9/2/10 at 12:20 PM

get a second hand acoustic off gumtree you should be able to get one for around £25-30 wont be the best but will do for learning.

then go and download learn and master guitar. its a 20 dvd set but if you know where to look you can get it for free. or chuck me a box of blanks and i will make a backup of mine for you.

Jasper - 9/2/10 at 12:31 PM

Second on the Didgerido, I've got one I picked up in Darwin, can play it a bit too, but haven't picked it up for years. The challenge is the circular breathing, once you've got that, then you can really start to play.

I remember once busking down Kings Cross Underground station, sounded fantastic in the tunnels, and made myself a few quid

Or alternatively take up smoking weed and loose all sense of achievement and direction!!!

Miks15 - 9/2/10 at 02:16 PM

hicost blade - 9/2/10 at 10:10 PM

Take up drugs...

You could spend your time making some locost bongs......

Or you could do some work you student bum......

I say that because I wish I was still a student....mmm masters in chillaxing

I spent most of my spare time as a student in breakers yards, we had 5 within 20 miles (silverlakes being one of them!) my house mate was well into cars too so we were like pigs in sh*t....

McLannahan - 9/2/10 at 10:22 PM

When Steve and I were at university together we financially supported the local business community.

Bargain Booze and the Chinese seemed to be the only benefactors?

Mr Copeland look where you've dragged this thread!!! Shame on you

I suggest you collect bellybutton fluff and invent an engine that runs on it and sell it to Locosters with a view to paying off your student loan.

By the way where does your girlfriend live?

......Neil

NS Dev - 13/2/10 at 10:17 AM

lol a few posts up re. most time spent in breakers yards, I did that too at uni!!

We started an in-college off road race "series" where we built buggies and raced them round the college farm.

We built a mini subframe at the rear jobbie, and a bike engine spaceframe one too. The local scrappy were very helpful, and donated most of the bits in return for free student advertising and big stickers on everything that we drove!!

Furber Bros of Child's Ercall in shropshire, Gary who runs it is an ace bloke, saw him again recently for the first time in ten years, true motorsport fanatic!!

Anyway, if you are really stuck, can you make it over to hinckley.........we can use free labour in our restoration workshop!!
