eek, near hospital/death blunder
NS Dev - 20/2/10 at 05:27 PM

Just got the cutting torch on a Nissan Skyline rear upright to get the tierod balljoint out (b1oody tight press fit, and corroded in).................

Just put the drift in the back end of the joint to knock it out with the big hammer, then BANG, huge explosion, crap in eyes and pain in the hand that was holding the drift...........

where the hell is the drift, and come to that where's the hammer...........

Drift is stuck in the roof of the building, no sign of the balljoint innards, hammer on the floor a few feet away.

Fortunately the welding glove seems to have kept my hand in one piece, and a trip up the big ladder salvaged the punch from the roof, which only punctured the insulation board and not the outer roof skin........

The pretty heavy drift flew 15ft vertically and punched into the roof......thank god I wasn't leaning over it

I'd assumed that the grease, muck oil etc would just come out of the joint, but it appears to have sealed the ball into its seat with enough force that when it got to a very high pressure, it blew the other side of the joint out, which was forged/swaged in.................

eeek

grease and oxy dont get on too well i belive, there is a warning lable on the cylinders

NS Dev - 20/2/10 at 05:50 PM

Yea, but I never put any oxygen on it, I kept it on a reducing flame, and a big long feathery flame at that......

I think it was just the pure heat, must have gassed off the grease, which had no-where to expand.......

just glad to be intact to be honest, even if my hearing in my right ear is going to take a while to return I think!

NS Dev - 20/2/10 at 07:03 PM

You nearly had chance to sift through them never mind pick them G You'll think about this every time you light the burning tackle for a while now Nat, the local army stores here has some bomb disposal helmets with 1/2" thick visors.

This serves as another waring to us all to be careful!

If I wasn't as balanced as I am, and if I was a newbie to cars and mechanicing in general, and had read some of the posts from Russboss and others, I wouldn't go anywhere near the garage! Too bloody dangerous!

T66 - 27/2/10 at 09:46 AM

Close call Nat.....

Done similar myself with the gas torch, but never seen the likes of grease going off with a bang.

Only ever plastic cups full of acetylene then lit, that was progressed one day by one of the guys filling a cornflake box with acetylene....

Black face & overalls and dodgy ears for a few days.

If you plan on killing yourself , make sure you write down all your 126 thoughts & ideas before hitting the button please...
