Cape Town - An 18-seater school bus was impounded and the driver arrested after it was spotted travelling through Mitchell's Plain packed with
102 children, Cape Town traffic services said on Friday.
Spokesperson Merle Lourens said the bus had a false licence plate, its back brakes were not working, its safety windows had been replaced with perspex
and wooden benches were fitted inside for extra seats.
"Officers found scholars aged between five and 13 years sitting on the floor and on each other's laps," she said.
The 49-year-old driver was arrested and faces several charges, including driving without a licence and a professional driving permit.
The Western Cape government last year launched an intensive campaign to crack down on unsafe buses.

Thats pretty impressive, but seriously, how could you get 102 children in one of those buses? Must have been hanging out all windows

Health and safety is only a concern in a society with too many lawyers
It's always amusing/concerning to see a family of 4 or 5 on a moped
BUT on the other hand it reduces congestion
and in one accident the global "people count"
Just the drivers way of contributing to global warming initiatives by reducing the per passenger mile carbon footprint - he should be rewarded not
prosecuted.
Ach, that's how we all used to travel.
My own record is 6 in a Mini.
My old man used to have assorted junk.
Vauxhall Crestas having a bench seat were ideal for three in the front. When we stopped having cars with bench seats, we just had two on the passenger
seat. There were usually 4 on the back seat.
Them was the days, you young people, you don't know you're born etc....
