chap on telly now, not worked for 7 years, 5 kids and one on the way, taking in 29k a year in benefits lives in a 6 bed house!

Brings it home just how messed up the benefit system is. BBC1 now.

I cant quite accept that i havent got the wrong end of the stick, there must be a mistake somewhere!

I've thought for a while now that benefits should be capped at the average wage. The savings should be put into a system where you're always better off working than not and you're always better off by doing more hours.

The current system penalises people who work a couple of hours a week and penalises them again if they go over 18 or so hours a week. It also allows people to amass large "incomes" on benefits that they can't hope to match by working.

Labour don't want to fix it and Conservative just want to cut everything. Neither would attempt to fix the problem. The Lib Dems have got policies to help people who work for low incomes but they won't fix this problem either.

So that's the equivalent of £29k AFTER tax! He must be really, really good at doing naff all to get paid that amount!

But, looking at the title of the thread and some of the comments above, is it the fault of the guy or the system. If it's being offered...

thats what im thinking. Im grafting like a twat (80 hours the other week), keeping 4 people in work currently, and i doubt i'll clear that this year.

quite right. I cant believe someone has set up such a bad system of benefits. They should be shot.

David Jenkins - 10/3/10 at 09:36 PM

Labour would much rather that you get benefits and are thus beholden to the state, than cut taxes so that you can pay your own independent way.

(not just my theory - I've read that in a few political analyses).

big_wasa - 10/3/10 at 09:38 PM

Me and the wife are watching this

My last job gave me first hand experiance on how the other half live .....

Ive got a quid that says he will never work again.

And they didnt list the hidden stuff that we have to pay like Rent / mortgage council tax.

I would live much better if I wasnt paying for this crap

austin man - 10/3/10 at 09:42 PM

its not a one off, I work with it daily, not bad when the guy signing is dressed head to to in Henley gear etc and hasn't worked for 10 years

SPYDER - 10/3/10 at 09:43 PM

A similar bunch of ne'er do wells live next door to me.
£150k bungalow for nowt.
New people carrier for nowt. (mobility)
Bills paid etc.
Don't have to get up for work at 4:50 AM.

But he doesn't have a Spyder Silverstone in one garage and a Phoenix Fireblade track toy in the other!
This thought will be consoling me at 5 o'clock when I'm scraping the ice off the windscreen.

Geoff.

RichieHall - 10/3/10 at 09:51 PM

What's all this 'encourage' them to work? There's plenty of community service type work to be done, if they don't complete 34 hours of satisfactory work no benefits!

Get 'em neutered for a start!

I've had this idea for a long time. That it is done from space, by a type of death ray that sweeps across dolesville or even by mobile phone.

Some sort of work should be done in the community to earn their dole.

The gammar police in tonight?

In actual fact correct gammar is, it is.

If this is the best comment you can make on this thread then I think you are in the wrong forum.

One of those living round the corner here....never worked in 39 years or never since leaving school.....5 kids free house and wife gets paid to look after her own sons who have mental problems....

morcus - 11/3/10 at 02:45 AM

I can't see anyone sorting it out any time soon. It does seem like I'd be massively better off If I procured some children and stopped working. I get payed by the hour so I can't be sure but I believe I make less than half of that before tax, and the comptor at work is always saying I'm working to many hours (In the last two months only one person has been clocked in longer than me.)

I've always thought the best solution would be to take the Kids away so that they don't have an excuse.

hughpinder - 11/3/10 at 08:46 AM

The systems definately broken - it should pay enough to survive. Why do you need a massive house just because you've chosen to have loads of kids? People didn't when I was younger (in N. Ireland and I new quite a few people with at least 6 kids living in 3 bed houses). If the 'extra' benefits were capped at 2 kids worth you would suddenly find the number scroungers who live on benefits and have loads of kids would start to reduce.

Think how much you have to earn to take home £29,000!!

morcus - 11/3/10 at 02:48 PM

It would be high 30's at least, add on council tax and mortgage and thats what us working people would have to be earning and I reckon its in the 50's or 60's.
