3 months ago I would have said "Always worth a go" but after ringing up Orange and trying that technique I ended up with the "sales assistant" hanging up on me and my phone being disconnected shortly afterwards!!

If you don't ask you don't get....

Won't hurt - worst they'll do is as you requested first and cancel your movies package... Always worth a try - like everything there's always margin to be reduced.

or say "if you want to cancel your sky subscription, i'll get that done for you right now." 20 minutes later, no telly

When I ditched Sky, I told them it was too expensive and asked if there was anyway we could lighten the financial load... I was given two options - 1. Get rid of various channels (the only ones worth having!). 2. Cancel

Needless to say, I cancelled and got Freesat instead.

55ant - 17/3/10 at 02:05 PM

hmm, well ill give them a call, cant get anything otherr than sky anyway, seem to be ina freeview blackspot, sucks. well lets see how it goes! ill let ya know in a minute.

Seven_Monkey - 17/3/10 at 02:06 PM

Should've read that a little better.. I wouldn't say your leaving them as yes - they could just cancel for you by talking over you and then hanging up! No Telly!

But there's always room for them to budge on packages.

55ant - 17/3/10 at 02:13 PM

had an argument over passwords and hung up. i think i may have a patience problem.

blakep82 - 17/3/10 at 02:14 PM

ah, better way to word it: I'm 'thinking' of cancelling as theres lots of channels i don't use

if they offer any deals, then all good, chances are they might just ask which ones you don't use.

karlak - 17/3/10 at 02:14 PM

I would email them from their webpage - give them your account number etc.

I did this recently and got a "free" out of warranty service call and a box swap.

I think the problem with calling is that it's just luck who picks the phone up. If you send an email it will eventually get to the correct cancellation/retention department.

If you can get sky, then you can get Freesat - it will use the same dish, cable and connector (unscrew from one, and into the other).

Not sure of the box prices, but I believe that they're well under £100 without HD, just over with it.

55ant - 17/3/10 at 02:26 PM

ooh thats interesting about freesat, i have sent an email after your advice and awaiting a response saying im recieving £200 of m&s vouchers and free sky for life!

cheers all.

Jasper - 17/3/10 at 02:29 PM

I use FreeSat HD with a PVR box, all for about £250, and as others have said, it uses all the Sky connections.

Love it, no monthly fee, and get my movies elsewhere.

Humbug - 17/3/10 at 02:32 PM

If you've got the sky box you can receive "Freesat from Sky" free to view channels without a Sky subscription. They work without a card, but they don't include a small number of channels that are mandatory in this household, including Five (for Neighbours - SWMBO, not me!). These channels are called "free to air" i.e. you don't have to buy a box to receive them but you do have to pay to decode them and view them

In fact, for a year or so after cancelling we did get the extra channels free, then we got a message on the screen saying the card was going to run out. £20 got a card that should last for a few years.

So far, so good.

ETA: The channel lists is not exactly the same as normal Freesat, i.e. the one where you have to buy a separate box

We have a Freesat telly in the living room, a Grundig Freesat box for the kitchen telly (£40) and a Humax PVR Freesat box in the bedroom for recording (£250).

All bases covered and no more monthly payments!

scudderfish - 17/3/10 at 04:31 PM

I ditched Sky and got a Humax HD Freesat PVR and haven't looked back. The only problem is the number of times I've had to tell Sky "f**k off, I'm not coming back"

iceman26 - 17/3/10 at 08:55 PM

the dark box i have in the for sale section can be used just for freesat and you can use hard drive for recording with it
also it a hd box so you get itv and bbc hd

coozer - 17/3/10 at 09:52 PM

How many channels on Freesat? Can I get the sports channels and documentary channels the same as Sky?

Just downgraded from the full HD package ditching HD, multiroom and movies.

Only thign they asked was why I didn't want the HD and told her because it was no better than the standard channels usign the hdmi connection and not worth the extra tenner.

No offers of anything free

David Jenkins - 17/3/10 at 10:01 PM

Nowhere near as many channels, if you're comparing it with Sky's premium products.

We only had the basic package, so went from a 100 or so channels of stuff we rarely watched, to 40 or 50 that we rarely watch. The difference being that we don't pay for FreeSat!

It all depends on how important TV is to you, I imagine. You may be able to guess my opinion of it!
